Scissor-tailed Flycatcher (2893a) A scissor-tailed flycatcher (Tyrannus forficatus) rests on a reed near the Arkansas River while watching for insect prey, which they catch on the wing. They get their name from the long tail feathers that "split" in flight like scissor blades. Scissortails migrate to southcentral USA after wintering in Central America. The males arrive in the USA before the females, which are colored similarly. Although found mainly in Texas (where they are known as the 'Texas Bird of Paradise') and Oklahoma, they can also range east and west to neighboring states such as here in western Arkansas. The sun was actually quite bright the evening that I took this picture but the best perch of a scissor-tailed flycatcher that I could get was this one in the shade. Still, you can see its bright colors and long tail. El sol, de verdad, era brillante la tarde que saque esta foto, pero esta foto en la sombra fue la de la mejor percha que pude lograr obtener de este tirano tijereta. Aun asi, se pueden ver sus colores vividos y su cola larga.
