The 2024 Hartford Local American Postal Workers Union Scholarship

 

DEDICATED TO THE MEMORIES OF:

Steve Peters, Brian Firnhaber, Gino Pellegrini,

Lawrence “Doc” Henderson & Mike Horvith

 

The Hartford A.P.W.U. will award college scholarships to children of our members. This is open to the children of both active and retired members of the Hartford A.P.W.U.  The students must be in grade twelve (12) or in college undergraduate study.

 

The scholarships, to be awarded for use toward tuition, room, board, books, and fees incurred while

the student is enrolled in a full-time higher education program, will be based upon academic excellence.

 

Judging will be based upon:  A transcript for the current school year, and a 400-500 word essay on the following:

Also, a copy of acceptance from the student’s college is to be submitted.  Also to be considered will be any extracurricular activities, plus any community and civic service.

 

ELIGIBILITY OF THE A.P.W.U. MEMBER PARENT OR GUARDIAN:

    The parent or guardian must be a member of the A.P.W.U. in good standing for a minimum  of two (2) years

    as of January 1, 2024, and is currently a member of Hartford Local #147.  The member be either active

    or retired.  Any full-time career or postal support employee newly hired who became an A.P.W.U. member 

    who began employment within this eligibility period must have become a member within ninety (90) days

    of their seniority date.

 

QUALIFICATION OF THE SECONDARY SCHOOL PROGRAM:

    A course of study toward a two year associate’s degree from an accredited community

    college or similar institution;

    A course of study toward a four year bachelor’s degree from an accredited college

    or university;

    Post High School graduation study in a technical school accredited by the State of

    Connecticut Department of Higher Education (or equivalent organization in any other

    state) toward study in a recognized mechanical, electrical, plumbing, or similar trade.

 

Upon the awards, the scholarship winners will be required to sign a waiver, agreeing to complete

the full year course of study for which the scholarship was awarded.
