Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission (HEC) has given final approval to a unique collaboration between HEC and APPNA for the “HEC-APPNA MERIT Visiting Expert Program.” Under the program, HEC will provide travel and stay expenses for qualified APPNA doctors who want to teach in Pakistan’s medical universities and affiliated colleges for 2-12 week teaching visits.

Program Elements:
A. APPNA expert must be Board Certified and have teaching experience or at least 1 publication.
B. Teaching visits can be 2-12 weeks at medical universities and affiliated colleges.
C. Economy class return airfare (maximum up to Rs. 135,000/-) and Rs. 25,000/- per week will be paid as remuneration, through the host university.

Application & Approval Process:
1. APPNA experts will submit application to APPNA MERIT.
2. APPNA MERIT will nominate qualified experts to Pakistani medical university (or affiliated college, which must approve and forward to university).
3. Medical university will approve and submit to HEC program officer for final approval.
4. Upon final approval by HEC, the medical university will formally invite the APPNA expert and will be responsible for all professional and financial aspects of the visit.
5. HEC will need 3 months for application approval, so APPNA experts will need to plan ahead by 4-5 months for their teaching visit.

This HEC APPNA program will fulfill a long standing request of APPNA physicians to create mechanisms that enable them to share with their alma maters in Pakistan their most valuable resource, their expertise. Through teaching visits, APPNA physicians can train the next generation of Pakistani doctors who face mounting hurdles in pursuing training overseas. At the same time, APPNA visiting experts will have the satisfaction of treating many underprivileged Pakistani patients during their hands-on teaching visits, improving or saving many lives.If enough APPNA physicians sign up in a specialty, they will be able to create or strengthen Centers of Teaching Excellence in their specialty areas in Pakistan.
