APPNA MERIT

International

Introduction

APPNA MERIT is the Medical Education & Research International Training & Transfer of Technology initiative of the Association of Physicians of Pakistani-descent of North America. APPNA MERIT is working with Pakistan’s medical universities and educational institutions to help them develop 21st century medical education, research and practice. 
After extensive consultations with Pakistani stakeholders, APPNA MERIT has launched a number of programs to mobilize the 15,000 Pakistani-American and Pakistani-Canadian physicians and others to contribute their expertise and time to this mission.
MERIT Programs

§ Short Duration Visiting Faculty Program

2-week Post-Graduate teaching assignments in Pakistan. Travel can be funded by VEPCON, HEC.  

§ Short Courses & Lectures in Specific Topic Areas

APPNA SUKOON Palliative Care Short Courses and BLS Short Courses held in 2007 are examples.

§ Specialty-specific MERITnets

Specialty-specific Residency/Fellowship Training Enrichment programs, developed by a collaborating network of APPNA specialists in a particular specialty. Each specialty MERITnet works with a counterpart specialty department in Pakistan to deliver a year-long program of training and curriculum enrichment to help build a Specialty Training Center of Excellence.

§ Telemedicine Initiatives

Telemedicine projects in Dermatology and Primary Healthcare are underway.

§ Medical Curriculum Reform & Updating

APPNA physicians involved with medical curriculum initiatives in North American medical colleges coming together to help Pakistan's medical universities and colleges reform and update the current education curriculum and bring MBBS Education in Pakistan into the 21st century.

§ APPNA SUKOON

APPNA’s palliative and hospice initiative for Pakistan, to increase awareness of palliative and hospice care in Pakistan, help establish this as a subspecialty in teaching hospitals, and included in medical and nursing curricula.
