For this project, I decided to experiment with making homemade baby food. My husband & I are expecting our first child in February. Even though I am not really into cooking, I wanted to give this a try. It actually ended up being easier than I thought it would be, & I was really pleased with my results. These slideshows take you through the steps.
Step 1: Selecting Fruit
My trip to Corey Lake Orchards was a lot of fun. It's right up the road from me in Three Rivers, Michigan and is such a beautiful spot. My husband's family picks apples and grapes there every year.
Step 2: Making Applesauce
Making applesauce was much easier than I thought it would be. No peeling or coring required if you have the right kind of strainer. The pink color, caused by the redness of the peels, was a surprise. I loved that the apples were so sweet that we didn't have to add any sugar.
The process for pears is the same as for apples. I also experimented with plums. They take less time to steam, but the pits have to be removed before straining. I mixed up combinations of all three.
Step 3: Preserving
The canning was also much easier than I thought it would be. You can also freeze the baby food, but it doesn't last as long.
