In Columbus, Ohio, in May of 1984 a group of undergraduate students led by Dr. Josue Cruz,
Assistant Vice Provost to the Office of Minority Affairs, set out to research the country for other Greek lettered organizations and learn how to begin a Latino/a fraternity at the Ohio State University. May 18, 1984 Several students attending a Hispanic leadership retreat noted a need for Latino organizations at The Ohio State University. An exploratory group, led by Dr. Josue Cruz, Assistant Vice Provost to the Office of Minority Affairs, was formed to research possible fraternities and sororities. After reviewing their findings, the group decided to start a new Latino Greek organization. February 11, 1985 Alpha Psi Lambda was established at The Ohio State University. March 10, 1985 At The Ohio State University, thirteen men and women were officially initiated into Alpha Psi Lambda. These individuals set the foundation for what is now the nation's first and largest Co-Ed Latino fraternity. On the weekend of May 7, 1988, a group of men and women from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign made history at the Ohio State University. These students expressed a need for an organization that would bring together the various Latino/a friendship. They felt that Alpha Psi Lambda could dispel the lack of closeness that existed on campus. For this reason, these 21 men and women traveled to Ohio in search of a family that would bring Latino/a students at the University of Illinois closer in tradition and culture. While in Ohio, these students learned the history, constitution, by-laws, and traditions of Alpha Psi Lambda. On May 8, 1988, the students from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign were inducted as active members of Alpha Psi Lambda. These Students founded Beta Chapter of Alpha Psi Lambda and are known as “La Familia.” September 25, 1992 Alpha Psi Lambda was officially recognized as a National organization. TODAY Alpha Psi Lambda has grown to include twenty chapters with over 1600 members. It is the nation's first and largest Co-Ed Latino fraternity. It is impossible to underestimate the contribution that the founders of Alpha Psi Lambda have made toward the enrichment of the lives of both Latina\(os) and non-Latina\(os) alike. The spread of Alpha Psi Lambda to universities across the country extends its influence more each year. We are grateful to our founders for without the dedication and fortitude they had to see the product of their great vision through to completion, none of us would be able to enjoy the rich fruit of Alpha Psi Lambda today. | Los Primeros: Diana Acevedo Juan Casimiro Carolyn Christian James Cordero Tammy Harris Clara Isern Marisol Lugo Yolanda Natal Saddy Rivera Nancy Romo Annette Saldivar Annette Seda Juan Vera La Familia: Carmen Barron Arnaldo Buitron Maria Carillo Victor Ceballos Angel Colon Tony Delgado Carol Evans Eddie Garces Saul Garcia Jaime Garibay Jesse Guzman Jose Hernandez Martin Martinez Sally Meza Nora Navarro Demetrio Ornelas Oscar Ortiz Luz Palacio Alex Rivera Marlene Rivera Roberto Vargas |
