Wooden Nail Assembly
Wooden Nail Assembly
You ever see those wooden pegs in an old barn? This is what they used before nails came along. Alexia was trying to shape up one using a drawing knife. Rumbleway, The Real FarmVille Photo and story by Bill Hughes What looked like a rainy Sunday morning, turned out to be a delightful afternoon for Rumbleway Farm's, 10th annual Farm Day near Conowingo. The organic family farm also operates its own small grocery store that's open 6 days a week. The setting was nostalgic for a visit to the country. A variety of vendors turned out and hours worth of activities awaited the hundreds of people who arrived for the rain or shine event. A fishing tournament took place at the pond off of McCauley Road. The Fair Hill Nature Center talked about our area and even brought with them a "hog-nosed" snake. A saw used to cut lumber, made pleasant smelling planks out of a cedar tree and a busy year for Kilby Cream brought their own chocolate milk for tasting. Hay rides and a covered wagon excursion through the fields were also available. "I just do this a little bit in parades and wagon trains," said Jule Vaccarini of Conowingo (in photo), who owns the covered wagon pulled by Jude on the left and Julie. "This is an original Thornhill from Lynchburg, Virginia. I bought it in Tennessee." Milburn Orchards from Elkton gave out samples of their sweet apple cider. A pie eating contest featured many different flavored pies and the musical entertainment of local Cecil County bluegrass group Baygrass took the wagon stage for the 2nd year. They will be at the Pickled Herring in North East tonight from 8pm-11:30pm and UnWind on October 9th. "It turned out to be a beautiful day," said vocalist/banjo player James Wooster. ""We really like being a part of the local events and supporting the community and farms." An old fashioned carpenter called a woodwright, Rupert Rossetti of Port Deposit was on hand making pegs, made for constructing barns long before nails were used. West Nottingham Academy seniors, Alexia Hionis from Lancaster, Pennsylvania with school friend Christine Brady from Jarrettsville, Maryland wanted to learn how they were made. Both of them had been volunteering at the farm and helped make the homemade ice cream. "We just do it to help the community," Alexia said. One of the other students from WNA was Michelle Carter from Brooklyn, New York. She came from the big city to being out in the country and that has been a dramatic change of scenery for her. Michelle also helped make the homemade ice cream and was busy handing out spoons for guests to taste the vanilla flavored dessert. "I never had homemade ice cream before. It's delicious," she said. Michelle met many friendly people who scooped their own samples from the frigid bucket with ice packed around it. The day became a real treat for her and a chance to do something out of the ordinary "We'd normally be watching tv or doing homework." One of the passengers on the covered wagon discovered she had something in common with one of the "molly's" which came as a surprise to her. "Our daughter's name is Julie," said Susan Ross from Quarryville, Pennsylvania after the trip. "She said, that's great, I have a mule named after me." Rumbleway Farms store is open 6 days a week, is closed on Wednesday's and is located at 592 McCauley Road.
