Grading Procedures 2011-12

Mrs. Elaine Petsu        epetsu@immaculatahighschool.org

Tests, major quizzes, projects        65%

Short quizzes                                   15%

Homework/class work                    15%

Class participation                            5%

1.  The number of short quizzes in a quarter will vary according to the difficulty of the topics, the usefulness of quizzing in achieving set goals for a topic and the constraints of the school schedule.

2.  Test grades are double weighted. Each quarter will have at least 2 tests.

3.  Daily homework assignments are the student's responsibility and should be done in a mathematics notebook. These assignments are not checked or collected unless students are told when the assignment is given. The number of hand-in homework assignments in a quarter will also vary as in #1.

4.  Projects, when given, may be double weighted. Project directions include this information.

5.  Class participation grades will be assigned twice each quarter. Class participation grades begin at 80 for students who come to class on time, prepared to work with the text and all other required materials and who are on task in class. Grades increase by asking/answering questions, being involved in classroom activities, working appropriately in cooperative learning settings and coming for extra help when necessary. Class participation grades will decrease for lateness, excessive absence, missing materials and inappropriate classroom behavior.

6.  Notebooks are required but not collected or checked unless special circumstances warrant and then only with warning. Open notebook quizzes are sometimes given so an effective notebook must be maintained.

7.  Tests and major quizzes are announced as far in advance as possible. Short quizzes are not always announced.

8.  A "read" or "memorize" homework assignment may be subject to a pop quiz the next day in all levels of classes. Such quizzes are included in the homework grade.

9.  Open extra help sessions by subject are regularly scheduled after school usually to coordinate with major assessments. Individual extra help is also available after school by appointment and during some periods during the day with a pass issued by Mrs. Petsu (not the study hall/lunch moderator) and some Activity Periods with a pass from Mrs. Petsu.

The teacher reserves the right to adjust the weighting for special circumstances (e.g., extended hospitalization) but only in the student's favor.
