What is JumpTo?

JumpTo is a menu based launcher that holds static links to files, folders, programs or websites. It allows you to "JumpTo" your items very quickly within any application or window.

Other features include quick note taking, text command launching, and window management.

JumpTo resides in the task icon tray (lower right corner) and can be accessed in many different ways.

The following key combination will show the menu any where on the screen and in any program:

Control + Middle Mouse Button Click

 Control + Right Click
>>

You can also show the menu by right clicking the tray icon in the lower right hand corner of your screen.

When you access the program through the ways mentioned above, a menu will show. This menu is the main control point of the application. This is where your links, memos, hidden windows, extra functions, and settings are located.

Adding Items

The first 4 submenus (named - Folders, Files, Programs, & Links by default) contain the links to various files, folders, programs or websites. You can rename these submenus by going to general settings which is located at Main Menu >> Settings >> General Settings.

Adding a link can be done 1 of 3 ways:

  • The first and easiest is by navigating to the sub-menu you wish to add a link in and choosing the last item "==>Add Item".
  • The second way of adding items is by navigating to Main Menu >> Settings >> Add New Menu Item.
  • The third way of adding items is by selecting a file in explorer, or highlighting a URL in a web browser and pressing Control + Shift + S. This will open the Add Menu Item window and will insert the file path or URL for you, but you still must select a sub menu and name the item.

If you wish to add a folder use the "Folder Browse" button or the "File Browse" button to add a file then select a folder or file and click open or ok. You may also drag and drop files directly on the the Add Item window.

To add a website just enter the URL (You do not need to add the preceding "http://" unless the website address does not start with "www")

The maximum number of items per menu is 50.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You may also add an email template by using the the simple Windows mailto: syntax. For example:

mailto:someone@somedomain.com?subject=This is my subject&body=This is the body of the message

Highlighted yellow is the syntax & highlighted blue is the information you provide.

If you wish to just add a new blank email use:

mailto:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For Administrators:

The "path" text field will operate just like the standard windows "Run Dialog" so - CMD line operations can also be added to the path text field like:

cmd /c systeminfo > c:\tmpFile.txt

This example tells the command line to get system info and export it to "C:\tmpfile.txt".

Adding Text Commands

You can add text commands which you can enter in the Run Box to open files, folders or URLs just like a normal menu item.

For instance if you set up the text command "New Msg" to run command "mailto:someone@somedomain" then you would open the run box, enter "New Msg" and the command associated with it will run.

A text command is not case sensitive and can contain as many or as little characters as you wish.

Add text commands just like you would a normal menu item, but instead of selecting a submenu in the drop down box select "Text Command". To edit or delete a text command use the manage items window and select "text commands" in the drop down box.

Managing Items

You can edit or delete the items you have added to the four submenus by going to Main Menu>>Settings>>Manage Menu Items.

When the "Manage Menu Items" window appears, select a submenu from the drop down box in the upper right hand corner. All of the menu items you have added to that submenu will appear below.

Right click an itemand you will be given the option of editing or deleting the item.

You can also add, edit, and delete text commands from here. Just choose Text Command from the drop down list.

You can not change the submenu an item belongs to when editing the item. Instead delete the item and add it to the submenu you wish. This may be added in a newer version of JumpTo.

You can also edit and delete items by showing the menu and holding Shift and clicking an item to edit it or holding Control and clicking an item to delete it.

At the current time moving and arranging items is not supported, but if you know how to edit .ini files you may edit the Menu Set.j2i file (in the program directory) which operates as a .ini. To edit the file open it with notepad and move the entries around. This is not recommended for the casual user. DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND ITS STRUCTURE. PLAYING AROUND WITH THIS FILE MAY LEAVE THE APPLICATION IN A NONFUNCTIONAL STATE. I will put up replacement files for download on the website in case this happens.

Memos

To add a memo you can go to Main Menu>>Memos>>Add Memo or just press Control + Shift + M.

After you add a memo you can use it by selecting it from the Memos menu. Doing this will put the entire memo on the clipboard for pasting and also display the first 265 characters of the memo in the system tray. This is why memos work best as short clips of text like an e-mail signature or text you will repetitively use instead of full paragraphs.

To edit, delete. or just view your memos go to Main Menu>>Memos>>View All Memos. Edit or delete your memo by right clicking it.

Hiding/Showing Windows

JumpTo gives you the option to hide and show windows to maintain a clean, uncluttered look and help you concentrate on the task at hand instead of having numerous windows open disrupting your workflow.

To hide a window, activate the window (bring it to the front by clicking it) then press Control + Spacebar. This does not close the window or make you loose any work it just hides it from view. The maximum number of windows that can be hidden at once is 20. This is done to keep your computer from being overloaded with applications (out of sight out of mind right?)

To show a window that has been hidden you can go to Main Menu>>Hidden Windows and select the window you wish to show.

The "Hidden Windows" menu can also be shown by itself by pressing Shift + Right Click making the operation quicker.

To show all windows that are hidden use the "Show all windows" item.

When you exit the application, any window that has been hidden will be shown again to keep from losing any windows. If the application is closed by force for example through the task manager, any windows that are hidden will stay hidden. To fix this just run JumpTo again and it will check if hidden windows exist and then show them automatically.

General Settings

Get to the general settings window by going to Main Menu>>Settings>>General Settings.

You can rename your submenus and choose an alternate search URL here. Hover over the fields with your mouse to see a  brief description.

Click "Submit Changes" to set your changes. During the change (usually no more than a few seconds) a small notification will appear in the task tray and the menu will become inactive. After the change has taken place the menu will be re-activated.

You may rename the submenus however you wish. Alpha and number characters only.

You may not name any submenu the same as another. Doing so will kick out an error message.

Suspending the Menu

You can suspend the menu by right clicking the tray icon and choosing "Suspend Menu". This will stop the menu from showing and any hotkeys from working. You may still access the menu by right clicking the tray icon.

It's helpful to suspend the menu at times when another application uses the same hotkeys JumpTo does or when playing a game.

Run Box

The Run Box is located in Main Menu>>Extra Functions. You can alternatively show the run box by pressing Control + R.

The run box is basically a replacement for the standard windows "Run Dialog" with added features.

  • Search the internet, which defaults to a google search, by entering "s=" and then your query without the quotations. You can change the default search URL by going to Main Menu>>Settings>>General Settings.

  • Trim the working set memory on a process by entering "tw=process name" without the quotation. This will force all currently unused data in the process from RAM to the windows page file. As the process needs the information again it will be brought back to RAM therefore raising the working set. This operation is only recommended for Administrators who know what they are doing. The function calls Kernal32.dll and can be read about here. This functionality is disabled in the "User" version of JumpTo.

Format Clipboard

The Format Clipboard function is located at Main Menu>>Extra Functions.
This function will erase all formatting on the clipboard and convert it to plain text.
This will also convert any file or folder that is one the clipboard into the actual path in exporer.

Date Functions

Located at Main Menu>>Extra Functions>>Dates

The date functions will put the current date and time on the clipboard for pasting.

  • Long Date will produce: Sunday, October 04 2009
  • Long Date + Time will produce: Sunday, October 04 2009 4:59 PM
  • Short Date will produce: 10/04/09
  •

    Extra notes

These notes are for experienced computer users only!

Edit the Menu Set.j2i file manually

The Menu Set.j2i file acts just like a standard .ini file. The first 5 sections contain the menu items for the four submenus and text commands. you can rename the submenu sections to anything you like, however the you can not rename the "text command" section or any other section. The menu items are set up as key within the 5 sections:

     [Folders]
    1=C Drive*c:\
    2=Notepad*notepad
    3=E-EmailEmail*mailto:someone@somedomain.com
    4=Empty

You can create, edit, position, or delete keys manually if you like. Each key is set up like the following:

1=This is your item name*This is the item path or command

Notice that an asterisk "*" concatenates the two.

After you edit the Menu Set.j2i file you must either restart JumpTo if you have renamed a submenu or go to general setting and click submit without changing any of the fields.

    GUI Background Image

You may create your own background image for the GUIs in JumpTo and replace it with the current one in >> Program Directory\Data.
The image must be exactly 500x500 pixels and be in JPG format. Name the custom image "gui back.jpg".

If you do not wish to have a background image for the GUIs simply delete or move this .jpg file.

You must restart the application if you choose to NOT use an image before the changes will take effect. Not doing so will leave you with a string that contains the path to the image on top of your GUI.

You do not have to restart the application if you swap images as the GUIs load the image at each instance and does not load the image into memory at start-up

    Set ShowMenuDelay

If you're like me, you don't like wasting the little bits of time waiting for a menu to appear.

There is a registry key that controls this delay.

    HKCU\ControlPanel\Desktop\ShowMenuDelay

By default Windows sets this value at 400. Lower this value at your own discretion. I set the value to 10 to make JumpTo really fast.
