25 things 'bout me, hm? 1) I have four tattoos. One big tree of life on my back, a plumeria flower on my shoulder from Hawaii, a celtic knot star on my ankle (my very first when I was 18), and a Newgrange spiral/triskele on my left wrist. 2) I love dolls. I don't care if you think they're creepy. I don't care if you think they're childish. I love them. I always have. Step off. 3) I've never played an actual dice-on-tabletop RPG game, though I have several RPG books (Changling: The Dreaming + various supplements, Wraith, and Deleria.) I also have my older brother's huge dice collection...somewhere. 4) I'm 28. My birthday is Dec 23rd. It sorta sucks. 5) I have fabulous crafting ideas all the time. I draw sketches and sometimes even get as far as getting the materials for them. Occasionally, I even make an attempt or two. It rarely works out. But I repeat this process all the time. Someday, I'll do it all. 6) I don't have a passport, but someday I want to go to Ireland. For now, I'd make do with being to get up to Canada. 7) I obsessively watch tv on dvd. I cannot stand commericals. I only follow ONE tv show on actual tv (The Big Bang Theory.) The rest I find online or netflix. 8) I just recently started meditation and kundalini yoga to combat chronic pain, anxiety, and depression. I think it actually has helped. This pleases me. 9) I shall be going to my first trip to Disney at the end of this Nov. I will be three weeks shy of 29 years old. My childhood is finally happening. =P 10) My favorite gemstones are moonstone, smoky quartz, and garnet. 11) My favorite band is Depeche Mode, though I tend to gravitate towards more folky/singer-songwriter music. 12) My favorite authors are Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Christopher Moore, and Jane Austen. 13) My given name isn't Wren, but it most definitely doesn't fit me as well as Wren does. I got the nickname when I was 16. 14) I hope I never outgrow Hello Kitty. 15) Pink is my favorite color, though I tend to wear blue/purple/grey/or black. 16) I work in an orthodontics lab, which probably sounds more interesting than it actually is. I use to work strictly in acrylics. Over the years I showed a willingness to learn new jobs, and have since been completely swamped with at least one thing from every department + secretary stuff. Have I mentioned that I totally deserve a raise? ^^;; 17) I'm single. But someday, I do want to get married and have some spawn. I'd like to give my kids a different life than the one I had, with someone who really wants and loves to be a father. 18) I gave up on Farmville on Facebook because it got too demanding. =P 19) I have a huge rubber duck collection. When I was in my apartment, my entire bathroom was decorated in ducks. People commented in shock/awe. 20) Needless to say, I never thought that growing up meant you had to give up all the fun things in life. Silliness is encouraged. 21) I desperately want a spinning wheel and a weaving loom. VIVA LA FIBER! 22) I'm not exactly an "animal person", merely a "cat person". Occasionally, I'm a "people person". 23) I can't watch Man vs. Food on the food network without getting crazy food cravings. 24) I want to be a vegetarian, but have a weakness for bacon and hamburgers. ^^;; 25) I still have no idea what I want to be when I grow up.
Colorful, modern, eclectic: Ideas for the hallway, from Elle Decor
In the entry hall of rug purveyor Stephanie Odegard’s Manhattan apartment, a colorful Odegard runner in a pattern called Hallo Metok leads past a custom bamboo display cabinet by Federico de Vera (www.deveraobjects.com) and an antique Thonet table. The carved marble panel set into the coffered ceiling shields a light source above. Photo by Antoine Bootz, Metropolitan Home, December 2008.

For more than 100 years, National Geographic has set the standard for nature, culture, and wildlife photography. In Through the Lens, 250 spectacular images?some famous, others rarely seen?are gathered in one lavish, newly formatted volume.
Through the Lens is divided into geographical regions with a special section devoted to space exploration. Each geographical section features an outstanding array of photographs that exemplifies the area’s unique people, wildlife, archaeology, culture, architecture, and environment, accompanied by brief but informative captions. From Barry Bishop’s heroic Mount Everest climb in the 1950s to the glorious wildlife of Asia and Africa, from ancient Maya culture to the Afghan woman found 17 years after her piercing green eyes captivated the world, these are some of the finest and most important photographs ever taken.
Featuring master photographers from the late 1800s to today, including Frans Lanting, David Doubilet, David Alan Harvey, Jodi Cobb, William Albert Allard, Nick Nichols, and Annie Griffiths Belt, Through the Lens is an extraordinary photographic celebration of some of the greatest the world has to offer.
Since the 10.5 million images in National Geographic's possession won't fit in a book, the 250 in this moderately glossy, minimally costly collection will do nicely. Through the Lens is a stunning collection of photos judiciously apportioned to represent the regions of the earth, the sea, and outer space; humans and nature; and even the history of the medium--a few historic black and whites contrast dramatically with the eye-popping modern color shots that dominate the book. As ever, the esthetic key to their impact is the use of big, emotional pictures with witty little captions, and whenever possible, startling juxtapositions. A Boston matron's faux-fur coat looks just like her pet Dalmatian (the caption identifies them as "spots fans"). The world's widest street (in Buenos Aires) by night looks great next to a grassy highway overpass for grizzly bears in Alberta. The famous green-eyed Afghan refugee poses in a purple burkha with her 1985 National Geographic cover. A Moscow shopper tries on a snowsuit, oblivious to the huge face in the ad on the wall behind him, whose nose he obscures and smile he bisects. A fuzzy shot of a 1907 inventor testing a multiwinged "Katydid" flying machine contrasts with a crisp 1974 shot of Skylab soaring far above fluffy clouds. Often, what's striking is the juxtaposition of ideas. An Arctic wolf making an impossible leap between ice floes arcs in midair, only its reflection hitting the frigid water. A 1935 Model T "surfs" a steep dune in White Sands, New Mexico. Chorus lines of stuffed cane-toad corpses with surreally clothespinned snouts perform on a taxidermist's shelf. Newborns are lined up like bread loaves in Shanghai. A woman in a white chador sits in the Tripoli airport, the white lines of fluorescent ceiling bulbs radiating behind her head like a saint's halo. This isn't the fanciest photo book of the season, but it certainly is a good deal. –Tim Appelo
