| Photography B210 Instructor Anton Dickerson http://sites.google.com/site/antondickerson1 Photography B210 is a one year course and is a basic introduction to Photography. This will include but not be limited to the following: History of Photography, Pinhole Photography, Film and Digital Camera Basics, Film Exposure and Development, Types of printing : Contact and Enlargements, Alternative Processes : Cyanotype, Van Dyke Brown, Gum and Lith printing, Liquid Emulsion and Hand coloring. Digital Photography and Color Photography. Students will complete a variety of shooting assignments which will include the following: Portraits, Landscapes, Photo Composition, and Still life. Written assingnments will include the following: Worksheets, Book Reports, Reasearch Papers, tests, quizzes, and video summaries. A majority of work will be completed in class. Picture taking assignments will primarily be completed off campus. This is the homework part of the class. Project Requirements: All students must take their own photos, develop their own film and print their own images. Negatives from one shooting assignment cannot be used for another shooting assignment. While freedom of expresssion is important, especially in an art classs, the follow subjects are not acceptable for this class: Pictures relating to drugs, alcohol, nudity, gang activith or pictures with obscene gesures.All assignments are due on specific dates all late work is subject to reduced credit. Supplies and Materials Photo Binder: A three ring binder dedicated to this class which will include 5 dividers, lined paper, this binder will be stored in the classroom Camera: A 35mm SLR [single lens reflex} camera is required for this course. You will need to bring this camera to class on occaision. Portfolio: An 81/2 x 11 folder with 24 pages of clear sleeves with Black inserts ex: Itoya Art profolio presentation book Film & Paper Students can purchase extra film and photo paper however it is not required as these items are supplied by the school. Grading of Photography Shooting Assignments Assignments in the early weeks of the first semester will focus on techniques in camera usage and darkroom lab skill. After students master the technical aspects of photography, the emphasis will to creativity, quality, concept and ideas. This is an Art class in which creativity and expressiveness are very important. Photographs are judged on the following criteria Composition The arrangement of visual elements that clearly inform the viewer with regard to the ideas being expressed--such as Rule of Thirds, Simplicity, Balance, Line. Visual Impact/Creativity/Concept The effect on the viewer; story telling quality which catches the eye and holds attention; the photographers unique vision. Technical Quality Examples would be photographs which show detail, in focus, free of dust an scratches, correct exposure for film and paper and a full range of tones in regard to film and print contrast. Presentation All assignment information completed and turned in with care with each contact sheet and photographic print. This also includes mounting and matting of prints and the portfolio. Grading of Assignments Grades will be based on classroom and lab participation, shooting assignments, printing assignments, classroom notes, tests and quizzes, film and book worksheets, and the course portfolio. This is a hands on course and there will be ample time in the darkroom, processing rooms as well as the classroom to complete all projects by the required due date. Shooting assignments carry the most weight and require the most time and effort followed by the portfolio and tests, quizzes and worksheets. Point scores are based on the Quality and Percentage of work completed. Plan ahead. Get to work on projects early and use lab time wisely. If you are absent it is your responsibility to acquire missed assignments, projects, and project briefing. Basic Grade Scale Conduct grades are based on class and lab behavior and how time is utilized. 90 -100 = A 80 - 90 = B 70 - 80 = C 60 - 70 = D 0 - 60 = F Use of Classroom Time Due to limited space and equipment in the darkroom, process rooms, and classroom areas, students will often have free time. This time is to be utilized for in class written work { Worksheets} followed studying for other class homework. If you are not working in the lab areas you are required to be in your assigned seat.
