STORYTELLER of STORIES FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD

I tell stories from all over the world, gathered on my travels, from friends, families and books. Enjoy my stories from Africa, where wisdom is wrapped up in delightful animal stories. I like to bring these to life through the use of my puppets.
Come with me to colourful Asia, the mysterious Middle East, the ancient places in Europe. Be moved by love stories from Scotland, Tonga and Japan. And tremble at the fearsome struggle between good and evil in the stories from Ireland and Russia.
Let Bible stories come alive, as the people of that time are seen in their ancient context, yet so relevant to us now and here.
Dig into your own memories when I tell stories of my childhood in cold Holland, hot Indonesia, and beautiful bush-clad New Zealand. And join me in exploring the wonderful stories of the Maori.

Antoinette has been storytelling professionally since 1994.
She tells stories in schools, libraries, church groups, retirement villages and Old-people Homes, and Festivals. She is developing historic stories for use in different areas.
Antoinette is the Secretary of the NZ Guild of Storytellers, in network contact with storytellers all over New Zealand.
The Auckland Storytellers Club meet on a monthly basis, (7.30pm last Thursday of the month) at her place.

USING PUPPETS IN STORYTELLING.
For many years now I have been using puppets with my storytelling. They are a great way of making a story come alive, with different personalities
each with their own 'voice'. And also a great way of inviting audience members to take a lively share in the story.
I love using my puppets. They allow such wonderful contrasts of personalities: a fierce lion, a blundering noisy rhinoceros, and a shy but clever rabbit can bring a whole African tale alive. You look at the children's faces, and they have really accepted the puppets as alive, forgetting that the voices come from you.
A shy child who puts her hands into the sleeve and glove-hands of a puppet, experiences a whole new freedom. Because it's the puppet who speaks, they can move into a whole new persona and character.
People who use stories therapeutically have often found puppets allow a wonderful release for their people. Because the feelings are out there, "owned" by the puppet - yet fully in the person's own control.
Over the years I have gathered my puppets, and they each have become characters, friends, embodying a whole world of the imagination, and allowing interaction in a delightful, fun and dramatically meaningful way.
Of course, not every story needs puppets. In fact, I find it's more effective if only two or three out of a program of seven stories, use puppets. But they open up a whole new dimension of storytelling. And the people, children and adults, love them.

THE AUCKLAND STORYTELLERS CLUB EVENINGS

We meet
On the last Thursday of every month

We're an enthusiastic group of storytellers, with a wide range of experience, styles and emphases. The format is informal, we decide on the form of the evening according to people's wishes and needs. Each teller gets a certain time space, which he or she can use as they like. Usually there is time to have a discussion after their story (or poem or song). And this is such valuable time! Some people ask for feedback on their story style, or want to discuss techniques: we all land up learning from each other.
Others initiate a discussion on a topic that flows from their story. Last month we landed up talking about how Drama relates to Storytelling, how the skills of one are used in the other - and times that the skills are quite different. Fascinating. Everybody who wants to give an idea or opinion, joins in. Other times we discuss different styles for different age groups; or how to vary your voice; or what to do about stories from different sources; or how to craft your own story.. And often we talk about different cultures, and how different their stories are, though similar themes may crop up.
So come and join in, you'll enjoy yourself! You may bring a story, or just come to listen, in the comfort of my lounge. You're welcome!

LANDLUBBERS, BEWARE, THE PIRATES ARE HERE!

All over Auckland libraries have had stories and storytellers on the dangerous theme of PIRATES!
We too. It was such fun, sweeping in, with full costume, red cloak flying, sword in sash, and trembling (haha..not) children on the floor of the library, waiting to share in an "Ahoy there!" standing ready to "Man the ropes! Beware you hearties! " Sashes were handed out, swords tucked into belts till ready to use, action! !" Stealthily sneak aboard! Pirates are in control.!"
Then I told stories from many countries, all of them about pirates, often involving the children, and a lot of fun we had!

"MEGAN'S LETTER"

"Dear Antoinette,
You did a fabulous storytime at Papatoetoe Library in the middle of the year, and Mangere Bridge library have now requested if you could be their storyteller at their "Finale" Party for the Summer Reading Programme. The date they have asked for is Wednesday the 26th January, at 2pm. There could be several other dates and times in that week, if you were available too. If you could let me know how you are placed for this date, and possibly other dates that week, that would be wonderful.
