Superscape is my second album, released August 2008 (in production since mid-2007).  It features interesting style mashups, catchy beats and deep, atmospheric chords, with hints of a harsh edge.  Superscape focuses on mashing together natural and artificial elements, and is a definite departure from the sound and feel of Antechamber (with a much greater complexity).  Where Antechamber was more a compilation, Superscape has a consistent theme and a very unique vibe.  The goal was to create some interesting mental imagery by fusing huge soundscapes and intricate, crunchy rhythms into a delicious, juicy blend.

All that said, it's much more interesting to hear than to read about.  Download the album pack below, containing high-quality MP3s and some fantastic-looking album art made by Greg Western (along with a playlist and a readme), or you can choose to download individual MP3s as you like.

TRACK INFORMATION

  • Alive (2:06) - Alive is a short ambient open to Superscape.  It begins with a very slow fade-in on tons of voices, and introduces a spacey bassline.  All of this evolves and builds into a gigantic climax at the end.  This song was intended to introduce a lot of the mood and feel I was trying to achieve.
  • Hothead (3:27) - Hothead is a fast-paced, beat-driven introduction filled with tribal drums and xylophones.  It was actually written for a themed competition back in November of '07 in which it placed first!  After building for awhile, Hothead drops away quickly in preparation for the next track.
  • Fields of Black (4:20) - A break after Hothead.  Fields of Black starts out with some echoey, crashing metal and strange sounds before breaking into a wide, deep bass and slow rhythm.  Eventually it introduces a flute melody and some industrial rhythm before building into a huge, hard-hitting close.  This was one of the tracks I was most satisfied with on the album overall.
  • Transparent (6:46) - Transparent is a remake (or maybe a re-imagining) of my first original song, Opaque (which is available in the Singles section here on the site).  It has an oddly jerky, disjointed kind of feel which eventually multiplies on itself.  After a piano solo, Transparent closes on several big chords drawn directly out of Opaque.
  • Hornswoggle (4:02) - Definitely the oddball.  Hornswoggle is very fast, noisy and intricate.  It starts out with some digital noises before cutting into some quick, jittery drums and some crunchy breaks.  Lots of spastic chord changes, wild drum solos and harsh melody-lines later, Hornswoggle explodes into a conclusion...or does it?
  • Arboria (5:38) - Arboria is structured entirely upon the shuffling and combining of 16 chords.  These smooth chords are set up against some angry rhythms and backed by some sweet bending guitar solos.  Arboria is one of the more atmospheric tracks.
  • Oil and Mud (6:52) - A long, boomy, and funky song with a bell-solo, lots of clanking metal/glass, a wide, reverby guitar, and a powerful, buzzy bassline.  This song was intended as a reference not just to the "feel" of mud and oil, but to the two natural substances which we treat oppositely - one as an expensive commodity and the other garbage.  It is also the longest track on the album.
  • In the Mist (5:12) - This is an odd hybrid track - it starts off with a slow, jazzy kind of vibe before breaking into a funky drumline and deep synths.  This builds up to a crazy, intricate line including hi-hats and a piano solo before pulling it back to slow jazz and finishing on a quiet note.
  • The Witching Hour (4:26) - After the first stage of the competition I entered Hothead in had drawn to a close, I won the right to choose the next theme (nighttime).  This resulted in The Witching Hour, which took second place for that month.  This has lots of swelling strings, an echoey bell solo, and a neat, distorted drumline.  After a bluesy solo, the melody returns and ends with a clap of thunder.
  • Lightfighter (5:01) - An energetic, beat-driven song with lots of loud synths and pounding rhythm.  Lightfighter is a reference to the sound and feel of both Get Innocuous by LCD Soundsystem and Other Galactic Funk by Meco.  A drum solo leads into the climax and then circles around to close where it began.  Lightfighter sounds great in Dolby Surround.
  • Superscape (6:10) - The title track and explosive closer to the album.  It starts quietly before leading into the first half of the song, a soft piece driven by strings, chimes, and synth accoustic guitar.  This transitions into the second half, a hard-hitting drum and bass section with loud electric guitar solos, reverby chimes forming the backdrop, with a relentless, ripped-open bassline.  It ends with a blast of sound and an echoing guitar line.  This song closes the album with the best representation of its concept - a juxtaposition of two very different styles and ideas.
