Instrumental Music Educators

Patrick Hayes, Director of Bands phayes@sequoits.com A graduate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Mr. Hayes is in his fourth year as director at Antioch Community High School.  He is currently pursuing his Masters at VanderCook College of Music.  As a trumpet player at the U of I, he has played in Symphonic Bands, Jazz Bands, Athletic Bands, and various Brass Ensembles.  He also marched with the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps for 3 years.  He currently plays clarinet with the Lakes Area Community Band.   Sarah Ogborn, Colorguard Coach sogborn@sequoits.com Mrs. Ogborn is a graduate of Purdue University where she loved watching the “All-American Marching Band” perform at half-time of Boilermaker football games. This is Mrs. Ogborn’s fifth year as an ACHS English teacher. In high school, Mrs. Ogborn was drum-major for three years.  She is excited to be working with the color guard and marching band this season!  Cindy White, Woodwind Specialist dougwhitefamily@hotmail.com Mrs. White grew up in Flint, MI and graduated from the University of Michigan-Flint, with a BMusEd, with a major in clarinet performance, and a minor in music history and theory.  While there, she played in a recorder and krummhorn consort.  They have a daughter and three sons in Richmond, IL.     Over the years she has taught all sorts of beginning instrumental students, but primarily, clarinet, piano and violin.  Mrs. White has also been a church music director, directing adult and children's choirs, handchimes and church instrumental groups.  As a clarinetist, she has also played in the Waukegan Municipal Band and the Lakes Area Community Band.  Currently, she is the elementary music teacher at a private school in Williams Bay, WI and is the band director for the junior and high school. Eric Spindler, Assistant Marching Band Director espindler@sequoits.com Mr. Spindler “bled Purple” playing baritone as a 3 year member of the Northwestern Wildcat Marching Band, and also performed with the Basketball Band for four years.  He has performed at four bowl games including the Alamo Bowl and Motor City Bowl with Northwestern and the Gator and Outback Bowls for his hometown Bulldogs in Crown Point, IN.  At Crown Point, he was heavily involved in instrumental music, playing trombone in the jazz band, orchestra, and pit orchestra in addition to pep band, and marching.  He spent two years living and teaching in the blistering heat of Tucson, Arizona.  Mr. Spindler is happy to return in his second year as a German and History teacher at Antioch Community High School.   John Stolfe, Percussion nstructor, Jazz Band Director , and Pit Orchestra Director jstolfe@sequoits.com Mr. Stolfe is an active music instructor, teaching drums and percussion at his independent private percussion studio in Kenosha, WI since September 2005.  Through his studio he provides private percussion lessons, master classes and group ensemble instruction. Additional educational programs provided at the studio include coordinating, sponsoring and facilitating various workshops with well known industry performing artists and leading educators in the field of percussion education.  In addition to his work with the Sequoits, he is the Percussion Head Instructor at Greendale High School, the Percussion Instructor at Kenosha Tremper High School and the Percussion Instructor for the Kenosha Unified School District summer marching bands: the Continental Band, the Rambler Band and the Band of the BlackWatch. A graduate of Roosevelt University in Chicago, Mr. Stolfe earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration while studying percussion performance, music education and music business. With over seven years experience in school settings, he is experienced as a drum line coach, percussion ensemble director, and clinician. He has provided educational/consultative services to many grade schools, middle schools and high schools within the S.E. Wisconsin and Northern Illinois areas.  His groups have performed throughout the United States and Canada, including appearances at Disney World and the United Nations in New York City. His percussion ensembles have repeatedly earned the highest ratings at state contests and festivals. Mr. Stolfe has over 23 years professional performance experience as a percussionist, performing with numerous, jazz, concert, classical, theatrical and liturgical groups through out Illinois and Wisconsin.  He is an active member of the Percussive Arts Society, MENC, WSMA and the Vic Firth Education Team. Our Philosophy of Music Education Young people should have an education that gives them the opportunity for a wide variety of learning experiences.  Music provides a unique avenue to the imaginative and affective aspects of life and their contribution to our cultural heritage. Young people play, sing, move, compose, and listen to culturally diverse music through participation in the music program.  They have active musical experiences of both an individual and shared nature under expert guidance.  Their lives and the life of the community will be enriched by their participation. As instrumental music educators at Antioch Community High School, we strive to do the following: Help students realize their potential by providing opportunities for creativity and expression of feelings and ideas through music. Develop individual musical interests and skills that will allow participation in music making throughout life. Nurture an enjoyment and understanding of culturally diverse music, which will enrich the quality of life. Expand knowledge, awareness, and appreciation of different kinds of music to cultivate discriminating consumers. Use technology to enhance music learning and music making. Offer varied musical experiences through which students may become acquainted with other art forms and cultures.
