District band festival unites area music students
Band students from six grade schools, middle schools and high schools gathered at ACHS on Tuesday, May 5th for District 117's annual band festival. Deborah Sheldon, professor of music education at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, was the guest conductor for the day.
Sheldon worked with younger band students in the morning, turning her attention to the advanced band students in the afternoon. Band members rehearsed selections that they had been preparing for weeks at their home schools.
In the evening performance, band students from every school played together in a program of patriotic and traditional songs. High school honors band members were in the spotlight with their own number,
"Second Suite in F" by Holst.

ACHS Adv. Winds combines with LCHS Winds to create D117 Honors Band at District Band Festival

The top bands at Antioch Comm HS and Lakes Comm HS will be combining together for a honors band performance at the annual District Band Festival.  Though this idea has been in the works for a few years, it is the first time the concert bands have combined.  The plans are that this district ensemble will become an annual tradition.  This may eventually evolve to a group that travels to represent the best of D117.  A recording of their first rehearsal is available:   http://d117honorband.wikispaces.com/

The District Band Festival is at 7 pm on Tuesday, May 4 in the Main Gym at ACHS.  The festival combines all D117 and sender school instrumental music students into a massive 500 member ensemble.  Admission is free.  Student call time is 6 pm.  8th grade parents have a short informational meeting presented by the boosters organization at 6:15 pm in the auditorium. Students are excited to have Dr. Deborah Sheldon as their guest conductor.

ACHS students performed well at the IHSA Solo & Ensemble Contest held at Grant HS on March 6th.  37 events received a Division I, 23 events received a Division II, 4 events received a Division III, and no ACHS student received a IV or V.  Special recoginition goes to Meghan Krase (Flute) and Randi Beyer (Soprano) for receiving the "Best of Day" award!  The percussion ensemble received a near-perfect score.

Sound Panels Improve Playing Environment & Protect Hearing
Over the Pulaski Day weekend, maintenance crews started installing sound panels in the band room.  When all sound panels are installed, sound
levels are expected to fall by 6 dB.  Since dB are a logarithmic scale, a 6 dB reduction is a 75% reduction in sound
levels.  A better playing environment will enable students to hear each other better, w
hile protecting their hearing over the long-term.  In
2006, the marching band was measured at 110 dB.  The band spent 2 years fundraising the money.  The custom panels were ordered last year.  The project took almost 4 years, but will protect student's hearing for many years to come.

Combined Concert Feb. 22: LACB & ACHS
The Lakes Area Community Band will be joining forces with the ACHS Advanced Wind Ensemble for a combined concert on Monday, Feb. 22nd. The community band rehearses in the ACHS Bandroom on Monday nights. This is the first time the two ensembles have been combined. Mr. Hayes thought it would be a good idea for the older community band members to share their love for music with the high school students. Many ACHS band students already perform with the community band, and they are expecially excited about combining forces. Sophomore Brian Chivers and senior Mike Chivers will be performing with their grandfather, who plays baritone.  The concert is Monday, Feb. 22nd, at 7:00 pm in the ACHS auditorium. Admission is free. Complimentary refreshments will be served afterwards.  Check out the News-Sun article about this concert: http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/newssun/news/2045944,5_1_WA13_ANTBAND_S1-100213.article  For more information about the community band: www.lacb.org

Gulf Coast Midwest Energy Partners, LLC.  is donating new drumline and pit equipment to the Marching Sequoits.  The 2010 Marching Sequoits will be recieving new Yamaha Marching Drums in a gray sparkle that will look great with their new uniforms.  They will also receive a new xylophone, vibraphone, and timpani carts.  CEO Brian R Schweigel is a regular philanthopist and has donated to many organizations in the past.  This year, he wanted to donate to a local group where he could see his donation truly make a difference.  With new percussion, new uniforms, a tentative trip to DCI Finals in Indianapolis, and competition at the Illinois State Marching Championship at ISU, the 2010 season promises to be the best one yet.

A rough draft of the 2010 schedule is available under the calendar tab of this webpage.  It includes 6 home football games, 5 competitions (including going to state), and refresher rehearsals between the two weeks of band camp.
