Our “Caught Being Good Campaign.” has begun.  This campaign reinforces the positive behaviors of our students that reflect our core values of respecting self, others and the school, doing our best, being safe and following directions. Students “caught” displaying these behaviors are rewarded with a coin which they trade or collect for different prices.

The Elementary School is currently in the implementation phase of Thematic Curricular Units per grade level. A reading initiative is underway and will be fully implemented in the 2008-2009 school year. The Elementary school body consists of approximately 436 students. The elementary staff is made up of 22 classroom teachers, 5 Spanish teachers, one reading coach, one Learning Support teacher, one ESL teacher, one SSL teacher, one Substitute teacher, one Counselor, one Music teacher, one Art teacher, and 14 classroom assistants.
These are some recent accomplishments:
  • Establishment of school wide behavior expectations for students
  • Establishment of school wide assembly aimed at showcasing and recognizing student talent and achievements.
  • Participation of faculty in presentation of professional development workshops
  • Development of positive rewards and safety campaigns to enhance school climate.
  • Redesign of Elementary school page to provide more information to parents and community.
These are some areas on which we are focusing efforts:
  • Implement Data collection and analysis mechanisms to improve instruction.
  • Implement standardized and systematic assessments to drive instructional interventions in grades K5-5th.
  • Assess ANS student progress in relation to their U.S. counterparts on shorter intervals.
  • Establish standards based grading through Powerschool in grades K3-1st
  • Promote and support the use of technology and technology integration into the curriculum.
  • Provide instructional support and leadership in the implementation of a Balanced Literacy approach.
  • Increase the pre-school offer by adding one K3 and one K4 class.

The Tiger meeting is a school event that takes place every 3 weeks. In this event the students are the center of attention. Children from different grade levels are chosen to be the host or hostess of the meeting. In the weeks prior to the meeting students have the opportunity to submit original writings or pieces of art to be considered by a board comprised of students and two teacher advisors. In the Tiger Meeting, the works of art and writing selected by the board members are displayed and student work recognized. Student performances and special guests are also featured. Tiger meetings always end with all the students singing "The ANS Virtues Song" (You can download the song and the lyrics from the Elementary School website). Parents are welcome to attend these meetings.
