By the time most girls move into the teen years, they are both computer literate and internet savvy. When online, they use a variety of slang terms and text lingo that could baffle the most advanced linguist. Due to a high level of media coverage, many parents are understandably concerned about the content found on websites such as MySpace and Facebook. Such parents may routinely go to these sites to ensure that the information their daughters are posting is reasonable and safe. But what most parents don’t know is how the internet is used by young people to help in their efforts to be thin.

Today, millions of teenage girls are struggling with anorexia and bulimia. In fact, the average age of eating disorder onset is 13. Often, these disorders begin with simple dieting, then gradually evolve into a full-blown psychiatric disorder. Just as young girls turn to the internet for everything from chatting with friends to accessing the latest celebrity gossip, they go to a variety of websites for weight-loss information -- and they are not disappointed. There are countless websites, images, and videos that provide explicit instructions for losing weight rapidly. The intent is frequently to offer weight loss methods whose practice can be concealed from adults, usually parents. These include fasting instructions, cleansing, extreme exercising, and many more dangerous tips. Teens get to these sites by using certain obscure words and phrases that are unknown by most parents.

If you have a daughter who spends a lot of time on the computer, we encourage you to familiarize yourself with the code words listed below. Any of the following terms should be considered a red flag for an eating disorder. Other less common terms are also:
