Abstract Landscape

I’m attracted to unruly landscapes. Landscapes that contain patterns which are disrupted by discordant notes. Black and white beech’s interrupted by mossy mounds and emboldened with  luminous crisp and wispy lichens. Landscapes that are not neat, that invite close inspection. Landscapes with which I can become intimate. For this reason they are often under a canopy, enclosed by trees in such a way that fore, mid and backgrounds are within close proximity to my viewing place. Or, in open spaces I explore the textures of the flora beneath my feet - the areas I feel directly in contact with. I want to describe the details of my physical presence in nature. I work on large scale paintings back in the studio as a continuation of the physical bodily awareness I have when tramping and sketching in nature. In working large scale I am interacting with my whole self, just as I did in the bush. Big works convey to the viewer a stronger sense of the sensations of being in such a wonderfully physical environment.
