Dystopia!!

Insanity Makes a Comeback

A New Look At The Dys/Utopian Ideals Of The Film and Literary World

Dystopia: An imaginary place or condition in which everything is as bad as possible

There are various definitions of a dystopia... Exploring Dystopia's list is the most apt:

  • Dystopian societies are undesirable or even horrifying.

  • Dystopian societies are usually futuristic and fictional.

  • Dystopian depictions can be regarded as warnings.

  • Dystopian fiction is both about today and tomorrow.

  • Dystopian fiction comments on our own society.

  • Dystopian and utopian concepts are relative.

Imagine a new world.  A world where books are burned.  Where humans are the new guinea pig of animal testing.  Where androids are indistinguishable from humans or where Big Brother watches your every move.

I know your first thought.  Insanity.  This could never happen.  Someone would stop it.  That world doesn't exist.

Are you sure?

If you find yourself surrounded by a complete civilization of chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans who believe that the universe has always been ruled by apes, what evidence do you have to the contrary?

If you live your life underground in mortal fear of a disease, then suddenly you are above ground with a team of psychologists telling you that whole life has been a concoction of your brain, how do you prove you don't belong in an asylum?

Sanity, or insanity, is the result of consensus.

The problem in defining and labeling the insane can be seen in various texts:

 V for Vendetta

 Mean Girls

  A Clockwork Orange

 Soylent Green
