Mission of the Albuquerque-UNM Medical Reserve Corps

Mission:

The Albuquerque-University of New Mexico Medical Reserve Corps known as (MRC) organizes and trains volunteers who are willing to respond to disasters and emergencies, mass prophylaxes, public health outreach through education, mission of the Office of the surgeon general mass prophylaxes

Goals:

 Our goal of the MRC is to extend our relationships with a variety of organizations, such as the University of New Mexico hospital University Center for Disaster Medicine, City of Albuquerque Office of Emergency Management, Albuquerque Metropolitan Medical Response System, NM Department of Health, Albuquerque Citizen Corps, New Mexico State Guard, Albuquerque Community Emergency Response Team, and Other NM Voluntary Organizations Active in disasters/emergencies.

Objectives:

·          Aid the community in disaster management through education, preparation and voluntary service.

·          Determine the educational needs of the community in relation to emergency preparedness.

·          Provide training to the local community related to emergency preparedness.

·          Recruit and volunteer in activities that support emergency relief groups and community safety organizations.

·          Provide the community with access to existing resources before, during and after an emergency in an effort to decrease the overall effects of the emergency.

·          Create and implement an emergency action plan that compliments and is an integral part of the communities existing emergency response plan.

·          Identify the needs of local law, health and emergency organizations present during an emergency situation.

·          Establish and maintain a partnership with local hospitals, medical services providers, healthcare organizations and emergency response teams.

·          Obtain a working knowledge of the communities current response plans as it pertains to local emergencies.

·          Identify the role of the MRC in relation to the local government’s emergencies plans.

·          Identify how the MRC will fit into the existing county disaster plan.

·          Design a plan on how best practices would support a structure for first responders.

·          Provide reserve support to local emergency agencies in an effort to enhance local emergency response efforts.

·          Identify available resources for use by the MRC before, during and after a local emergency.

·          Identify specific organizations that have partnered with the MRC for relief during an emergency.

·          Identify specific skills needed during a local emergency, utilizing them in a coordinated manner manner to their best advantage.

·          Train and prepare volunteers to effectively respond to a local emergency in an effort to minimize disability, death an emotional trauma resulting from a local emergency.

·          Identify the specific skills of each volunteer.

·          Determine how each volunteer can best assist the community before, during and after a local emergency.

·          Identify any training that may be needed by each volunteer.

·          Conduct bi-annual exercises in an effort to provide on-going training for each volunteer.

·          Recruit volunteers in an effort to adequately provide support to hospitals, medical service providers, healthcare organizations and or emergency response organizations before, during and after a local emergency.

·          Conduct activities geared toward the recruitment of volunteers.

·          Maintain active volunteers through community activities, continued education and training exercises.

 Scope:

·          The MRC has been established as a local emergency medical and public health resources for the communities served by the Albuquerque Medical Reserve Corps.

·          As a local resource, the Albuquerque-UNM Medical Reserve Corps will not normally be deployed outside the Albuquerque and surrounding area, however should the need arise, the unit may be deployed outside the Albuquerque area served by the MRC, if requested, as a region 6 mutual aid resource during a large scale emergency.
