Ankie Vytopil (1946) maakte haar eerste wandkleed toen ze 10 jaar was. Sindsdien groeide er interesse in het maken en ontwerpen van kleding. In de 80-er jaren volgde een driejarig verblijf in Troy, N.Y., waardoor de interesse voor patchwork werd gewekt. In Amerika ontstonden haar eerste eigen ontwerpen en werden ook de eerste quilts beloond met eervolle vermeldingen in competities. Bij terugkomst in Nederland bleek er een rage te zijn wat betreft patchwork en quiltmaking. Er kwam een kring van quiltmakers, de Patchwork Professionals, die jaarlijks een tentoonstelling hield om de patchwork quilt als kunstobject te promoten en te verkopen (kasteel Groeneveld in Baarn). Er werden quilts verkocht en op bestelling gemaakt, en workshops gegeven. Deze kring (opgericht door Ankie in 1988) heeft bestaan tot 1997.
In diezelfde periode schreef Ankie boeken over patchwork. Later volgden ook boeken over boomhutten, verlichting, en een autobiografie, die bestaat uit de combinatie van borduurwerk en tekst. Ankie Vytopil (1946) made her first wallhanging when she was 10 years old. Since then she was mainly interested in making her own clothes. In the 80's she spent 3 years in Troy, N.Y., where she discovered patchwork and quiltmaking. In the United States she made her first designs and she also received her first prizes (honorable mentions) in quilt competitions. Quilts were sold via a gallery in Troy and The Gazebo in New York City. Upon het return to Holland quiltmaking proved to be a craze in the country. Ankie started a collective, the Patchwork Professionals, to promote the patchwork quilt as an art object. The collective organized yearly exhibitions and workshops in kasteel Groeneveld in Baarn. Art quilts were sold, and quilts were made to order, and patterns and books were being sold. This collective existed from 1988 until 1997.
In the same period Ankie wrote five books about patchwork. Other books followed, on treehuts, on lighting, and an autobiography consisting of embroidery in combination with text. |
