Diversity: how many species, what are the sub-groups, are there common names for them?

·         Over 40,000 species of crustacean

·         Members of Crustacean group include lobsters, crabs, shrimps, krill, hermit crabs, copepods and many other organisms

  • subgroups are -
  •  
  •   branchipoda (brine shrimp, water fleas), remipedia, cephalocardia, copepoda, ostracoda (seed shrimp), branchiura (sea lice, fish lice, tongue worms), tantulocarida, thecostraca (barnacles), mystacocarida, malacostraca 

·         Divide crustaceans into two groups:

1.       Entomostracans – include the smaller species, such as fairy shrimp, water fleas, copepods, and barnacles
2.       Malacostaceans – include the larger, more familiar crustaceans, such as crabs, shrimp, and lobsters.
