Sexual Labeling 628586978607
Sexual Labeling 628586978607
It's only around 5-7 years that children understand that sex is biologically determined. Previously, children believe that being a boy or a girl is determined by the social context and physical characteristics (appearance, toys, activities). Blue for boys, pink for girls: a gender identity stampled by a sexual labeling. This artwork shows how a "sexual labeling" interferes in the sexual identity (symbolized by matches) and how it tends to loose its markers at adulthood: In a fetus stage, it's only around 5 months that a sexual identity (boy or girl) is emerging. The fetus can therefore be considered as a white label (two identical matches) until birth since gender identity remains virgin from any marketing or labeling pollution; From birth to adolescence, parents will interfere within the construction of a sexual identity of their children by adding a sexual labeling made of distorted and stereotyped images (like colors). The ability of discernment will however enable teenagers to sign the basement of a next rebellion against this parental labeling; In adulthood (flip the artwork in its vertical), physical characteristics will tend to confuse genders. Especially since women strengthened their position on the social stage of equality: new job functions are pushing women to change appearance, mainly through a dress code that is becoming more and more "unisex". A feminine gap that "metrosexual" men are filling by treating their physical appearance with a high degree of feminine care (metrosexuals aren't gays, there's no "disorder" regarding their sexual identity). If a sexual labeling is becoming increasingly inefficient since human relationships change, one may wonder if we don't move towards an increasingly asexual society, like in the years 1960-1970 when a certain androgyny were prevailing during the hippie vogue: floral or fuchsia shirts and long hair for everyone. The blue-pink border of this artwork should then fade over time. Note: This work is partly inspired by the research of Anne Dafflon Novelle (PhD in psychology at the University of Geneva) about a "differentiated socialization", to say: what are the social influences that may be exercised over children's construction of their gender identity. If the results of Anne's research can be summarized as "parents never had a stronger impression to raise their children in the same way, whereas actually, girls and boys have never been educated in such a differentiating environment", my own conclusions are radically opposed as soon as one leaves the "virtual" world of childhood. Therefore, I believe it would have been much more interesting if Anne devoted her research in the post-adolescence coz it's during adolescence that the gender identity of a child is truly shaping, when the body changes, around 15 during his/er sexual majority. It's also during adolescence that teenagers are likely to question everything through a reversal of identity.
