Plumpton Lake's Plughole
The stone blocks in this dam have steadfastly held back the waters of the artificial Plumpton lake since the mid eighteenth century, when they were put there by the designer John Carr to replace an even older barrier. It is listed as a Grade II Heritage Site. The overflow water in the lake now drains away through a more modern channel cut away at the side of the dam, but this rusty appendage (also known as a Sluice Valve) looks like it might be an old manual drainage pipe for the lake.
