The Official Site of the Philosophy Club at Angelo State University

All are lunatics, but he who can analyze his delusion is called   a    philosopher.                               ~Ambrose Bierce, Epigrams

Welcome to the  home of The Philosophy Club at Angelo State University.  We are an undergraduate organization, meeting weekly on campus at Angelo State in San Angelo, Texas.

There are five Philosophy courses being offered for the fall '08 semester. They are

  • "Existentialist Approaches to Political Violence: Kierkegaard to Sartre,"
  • "History of Modern Philosophy,"
  • "Critical Reasoning and Logic," and
  • "Introduction to Philosophy" (x2)

Our meetings are Sunday afternoons at 4:10--we'll be in the UC by the new Starbucks. It shouldn't take more than an hour or so, and we'll go over meeting times, and officer's nominations, as well as possible events for the 2008-2009 year.

We will be attemping the following this year...

  • The first annual Officer Inauguration and Member Appreciation dinner(scheduled for late November)
  • We encourage any of our members to submit papers for presentation--especially to regional philosophy conferences. To that end, we will try to set up a travel fund to help offset costs, for those whose papers have been  accepted.
  • For the last three years, we have discussed hosting a journal. Hopefully, we can try this in the Spring.

Go here to see what's going on today.

Spring '08

  • We went to OU's Annual Undergrad Philosophy Conference in Norman, OK, April11-13.
  • We began doing a monthly theme which is broken down at each weekly meeting into a more specific aspect of that theme. For February, we covered "Love", March -- "Sex and Ethics" and April's topic was "The American Citizen." We had some great discussions! If you are interested in suggesting more for this year, let us know.

  • End-of-Semester Lakehouse party

Fall '07

  • We began planning ASU's first Philosophy Conference, complete with paper presentations, and a real  live guest speaker.
  • We were recognized by the ASU Center for Student Involvement as an official organization.

Spring '07 was  also a great semester. Here is what we  accomplished that term:

  • Club was officially recognized by ASU Student Government Association
  • Officers were Elected
  • Monthly Events (movie night, essay-writing workshop II, etc.)
  • Field Trip to NTPA's conference, April 13-15, in Denton
  • End-of-Semester Party at Lakehouse
  • Our book was Albert Camus' The Stranger.
