Welcome to my PCA English website. I will maintain a page for all of the classes I teach during the 2011-2012 school term, but a large portion of this site will pertain to Advanced Placement Literature & Composition. Pages for other classes offer general information and attachments useful to students in those classes.
Advanced Placement Literature & Composition is a course designed to challenge strong language students who are committed to high achievement and maximum preparation prior to college. I anticipate a productive year in this innovative, student driven course. Students who rise to the challenge inherent in this class should reap enormous benefits, only one of which is success on the Advanced Placement examination in May.
Pinewood is pleased to offer two English II and English III tracks again this year. Tenth and eleventh grade students may choose to enroll in English II or English III, which are designed to offer students a stronger base of knowledge and proficiency in reading and writing, or in Honors English II or III, which are designed to groom students for success in AP Literature and Composition should they decide to take the course during their senior year. Recommended for students who exhibit superior verbal skills in English courses and perform well on the language portions of the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, honors level English classes ensure that students reach their maximum potential in language arts. Hopefully, this differentiation will benefit both students who need to spend more time on the fundamentals of English and those who are ready to move ahead a bit more quickly. I will teach only the Honors English II and Honors English III courses for the tenth and eleventh grade levels this year.
English IV students can expect a rigorous college preparatory course that requires independent reading, active class participation, writing, and proficiency in grammar and vocabulary.
I am very excited about the possibilities that the upcoming school year offers. Facility with written and oral language is essential to success in all career fields. It is my deepest hope and fervent prayer that the combined efforts of student and teacher will ensure that each of you reaches his or her potential.
I look forward to beginning our journey on Friday, August 12.
