Caring for Our Community

Welcome to P-6's Literacy Unit Website!

  1. Booklist...

Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White This book is about a girl who saves a pig from being killed.  She cares for the pig until he is sent to another farm where a spider cares for him and guides him on how to avoid going where most pigs go.

On Meadowview Street  by Henry Cole This book is about a girl who finds a wildflower in her backyard and decides to create a wildlife preserve to protect it.  She expands her wildlife preserve every time she finds a new flower.  Soon her whole backyard is a wildlife preserve, and when the neighbors see it they follow in her footsteps.

Mrs. Katz and Tush by Patricia Polacco This book is about a boy who finds a kitten, which he asks his neighbor to take in.  She agrees only if the boy promises to visit and help take care of the kitten.  Through the experience, they both learn a great deal about each other and become life long friends

Chicken Sunday by Patricia Polacco Chicken Sunday is about a group of three children who spend Sundays with Miss Eula.  They decide they want to buy her a hat that she always admires in the store window because of all she has done for them.  They do not have the money, but they find a way to earn it, so she can receive it for Easter.

What Planet Are You from, Clarice Bean? by Lauren Child  This book is about a girl, Clarice Bean, who must do an environmental project for her class.  For her project she decides to make signs and sit in a tree with some of her family members to keep the three on her street from being cut down.  This book illuminates my theme by showing kids something they can do to help the environment in their community

Loveykins by Quentin Blake Loveykins is a book about a lady named Angela who found a bird who had fallen out of his nest.  She decided to bring him home and care for him until he was well enough to go out on his own.  In return, he periodically brings Angela gifts of thanks.  This book illuminates my theme by focusing on the care of animals.

Dear P-6 Families,
I am so excited to let you know that our class will soon be starting a reading unit revolving around the theme of caring for our community.  We will be reading, thinking, and talking about books that demonstrate care for the community including people, animals, and the environment.  My hope is that your student’s idea of community and caring will be broadened.  And, by the end of the unit, they will have an idea of what they can do to help care for their own community.
                            Sincerely,
                                Miss Murphy

These are the things we are striving to learn while we studying the theme caring for our community...

1. In order to best care for our community, we need to have an appreciation for all the aspects of our community, which includes people, animals, and the environment.

2.  Caring for our community is not always easy.  It often takes courage, dedication, hard work, persistence, and a willingness to take risks.

3. Caring for our community often means solving problems. To solve problems we need to be creative, want change, and have a purpose.

4.  Each of us has the ability to care for the community in our own way.

We will also obtain these skills...

1.  We will be able to make inferences about caring for the         community and offer information to support our inference using our background knowledge and clues from the text.

2.  We will be able to make text-to-world connections and explain how our connections help us understand how the characters care for their community.
