  • Researchable Question - What strategies do elementary media specialists use to juggle the many tasks that they are responsible for?

Restate Importance of Study -  My media center has been part of the specials rotation for as long as anyone can remember and will be put on a flexible schedule next school year.  It is important for a compromise between the two to be made.  What can I do to ensure that no one regrets the media center not being part of the specials rotation?  How do I create fair and equal access for check out, media lessons, co-teaching and other needs in the media center?

  • Restate Context of Study -
•    Tadmore Elementary Media Center
•    K-5 school with approx. 570 students and 33 homerooms.
•    70% Hispanic population, 10% Caucasian, 10% African American, 10% other, Title I school
•    Media Center has been in a fixed schedule (dictated by the administration as part of the specials rotation to provide teacher planning time) for 4 media specialists.  There is a long history of limited collaboration between the media specialist and the teachers.  The program and collection developments have been weak due to time constraints.
•    The current principal is retiring and has been told that the media center has to be out of the rotation for the next principal.
•    It is currently up in the air how the teachers’ planning time will be affected.
•    The media specialist is hopeful that in the future the change will be seen as a positive for everyone (especially teachers and students), but is doubtful that the transition will be a smooth one.

  • Methodology - mixed methods survey with descriptive statistics

  • Data Collection technique - Survey created in Google Forms.  This survey will then be sent to 11 current elementary specialists in Hall County, Jackson Co, Clarke Co and Stephens Co.

  • How will data answer your research question?  The data collected from the survey will help provide insight as to how other media centers in the area are run and what is expected of their programs.  By collecting this data, I will be given a lot of information for making decisions in my own media center.

  • Identify who participants will be... Send survey out to elementary media specialists who I am personal friends/colleagues with.  I expect to have approx. 10-15 responses to the survey.

  • Procedures of Study:
            1.  finalize questions for survey
            2.  design online survey
            3.  Create link and request
            4.  email to possible participants
            5.  gather results
            6.  Tally for percentages, list answers for open ended questions
            7.  Use response to make educated decisions for making the transition between fixed and flexible schedule
