I'll be giving a talk on evolutionary pressures on meaning complexity at a workshop on " Rethinking Meaning" in Bologna, Italy, on 13 April. Lots of interesting people will be giving talks at the workshop, including Linda Smith (Indiana), Luc Steels (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) and Nick Enfield (MPI Nijmegen), to name just three. Full details in the programme, but everyone is welcome, and r egistration for the workshop is free. |

I gave a talk about “Linguistic Replicators: A Wild Goose Chase?” at the Ninth Evolution of Language Conference in Kyoto, Japan in March. Have a look at a commentary on the talk posted on leading language evolution blog, Replicated Typo.

We're pleased to announce the launch of a new MLitt Masters degree in English Language and Linguistics at the University of Stirling, which is accepting applications for entry in September 2011 now. The degree is suitable both for students keen to further their knowledge of English language and linguistics, and for those planning to move on to advanced research. It offers an extensive study programme focusing on the workings of language and its central role in human society; students can choose options from a wide range of possibilities, including modules on language and cognition, Old and Middle English, discourse analysis and evolutionary linguistics. |

Our experimental study into cross-situational learning has now been published in Cognitive Science.
We (Kenny Smith, Richard Blythe and I) show that participants use various cross-situational learning strategies in experimental conditions, switching between them according to the difficulty of the task they are given (difficulty is measured by the level of referential uncertainty in the exposures they receive, and the way these exposures are presented). We also argue that the different cross-situational learning strategies fall on a continuum of learning strategies, which can be thought of as a single associative learning mechanism with varying amounts of noise. |
