FOOD

Do you know what the ancient Egyptians ate? They had a large variety of food. For poultry, wealthy and poor citizens could afford to buy it. In this category included, geese, quails, cranes, and ducks. For meat, more often it was the wealthy families eating it, which was including, pork, beef, deer (gazelles), lamb, and goat. Fish was available t
o all, from the Nile. Not having refrigerators as we do, to preserve the fish or meat the Egyptians would either dip the meat into salt, or hang the meat somewhere to dry, and then store it away in clay pots. Bread wasn't risen or fluffy as you would see if you went into your kitchen and pulled some out right now, but flat and slightly hard. Don't be mistaken though, because it still very nutritious. Vegetables were very important to everyone's diet. they ate beans, chick peas, lentils, green peas, leeks, lettuce, garlic, and onions.  Fruits that were eaten were, dates, plums, figs, grapes, raisins, pomegranates, and watermelons. With dairy, they milked cattle, and used some of the milk for butter and cheese.
