FARMING

When you think of farming, do you think of miles of greenery, a tractor, and a barn somewhere on the edge of the field? well, not always farming is like that. In Ancient Egypt, the only real source of water was the Nile river. The Nile river streched for miles and was really the only reason the civilization existed. An object called a shadoof which has a weight on one end, and a bucket on the other is used to get water over to the crops. Some things that the Egyptians grew were, wheat, barley, vegetables, figs, melons, pomegranates, and flax which was made into linen. There were three seasons for farming:
Akhet - The flooding season (June-September)
Peret - The growing season (October-February)
Shemu- The harvesting season (March-May)
Ancient Egyptians had simple farming tools such as winnowing scoops, hoes, rakes, flint-bladed sickles and ploughs.
During Akhet, the egyptians would mend, or make new tools, and some awould even fish in the flood waters for food or extra money.
