Woodman Family Homeschool:
Go Green School of the Week
February 10-16, 2008
This week's School of the Week is our very first homeschool. The Woodman family in Atlanta, GA has taken top honors.
Mrs. Woodman tells us, that they started the school year addressing their family's environmental impact. She says, "The Go Green Initiative is about looking at what we already have and assessing how we can use those resources. How we will recycle/free cycle what we no longer use and what we will purchase in the future."
Here's what they are doing that you can do at your house too:
- created a compost bin from an old trashcan
- made a rainwater collector from an old plastic container
- recycle the plastic and aluminum waste generated at the kids homeschool group lunch each Friday
- take their own bags when they shop or just walk out without a bag.
- reduced paper towel use by 75% by purchasing several packs of good quality kitchen towels.
- use cloth napkins
- lunch boxes hold kitchen utensils, cloth napkins, and even glasses and plates when needed
- use refillable water bottles instead of buying disposable ones
switch to rechargeable batteries, which turned into a great idea for Halloween
- Christmas gifts this year were reuable lunch and shopping bags and rechargeable batteries.
The Woodmans hope to have a batch of compost ready this spring for their first garden which they will water with the rainwater they are collecting.
The results of all of their efforts has been noticeable. Their trash can is only half full each week. Way to go, Woodman Family!! This inspires us all.
