Antoni Gaudi was born in Reus in 1852 and received his architectural degree in 1878 and died in 1926.
Gaudi's work is greatly influence by nature, this is reflecte by the use of curved construction stones, twisted iron sculptures, and organic-like forms which are tipical of Gaudi's Barcelona architecture. Gaudi also covered many of his buildings with coloured tiles arranged in mosaic patterns. This added another important dimension to his buildings which is so often overlooked by architects, the use of colour. The combination of original design, interesting shapeds and vibrant colours in Gaudi's architecture gives a truly breathtaking visual experience to anyone viewing it. Gaudi's most famous building in Barcelona is of course the Sagrada familia, Gaudí sign the first official document as the architect of the sagrada Familia on March 28 in 1884 and is still not finished to this day. Although the Sagrada familia was actualy started in 1882 as a neo-Gothic structure under the direction of the architect Francesc P. Villar. Then Guadi took over and using Villar's plans as a starting point, but greatly expanding their scale and originality. The Sagrada Familia became Gaudi's main project for the rest of his life. He relised before he died that he would not get to see its completion, saying " It is not possible for one generation to erect the entire temple." By the time he died in 1926 only the crypt, apse , part of the Nacimiento facade and one tower had been completed. The Sagrada Familia is located north of the old city, but is still pretty central in the city.
As well as the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona there is also Guadi house, not because Guadi lived there but because Gaudi designed it. There is also la pedrera. Both of which are of Plaseo de Gracia. In which you can see many of Gaudi's designs and learn about Guadi himself. There is also parc Guell which was designed by Gaudi. In Parc Guell, Gaudi used shapes which harmonised with the landscape. He was aware of the struggle between man and nature. Along with many other things the park also includes a very long dragon bench, covered completly in colourful mosaic, in the traditional Gaudi stlye. Gaudi's work is till admired by many architects around the World as being one of the most unique and distinctive architectural styles even to this day. In Gaudi's time he was both critised and praised for his designs as he did not follow the normal at the time and did his own, completly unique designs.
