Photos, music, friends, family, travel, "Words on Books," community service... and less
For 26 years (1980 - 2006) a large part of my life was taken up running an independent bookstore in Mendocino, California. You can look out the bookstore's window at the Mendocino Bay by clicking Gallery Bookshop
I continue to write "Words on Books." The scripts for my weekly radio show are archived here: Words on Books
Since the fall of '07 I have: Received a lovely new left hip, continued to serve on the board of Mendocino community radio station KZYX, traveled to Italy to study the language for a month in Florence at Scuola Leonardo da Vinci, and continued to enjoy life, music (cello; chamber music) and the retirement of my wife, Joselyn from 33 years of teaching, as of June 2007.
In Italy I kept a travel blog at Travelpod
I continue to study Italian with local amici, and on the Internet through My Personal Language Tutor whom I highly recommend to any language learner, in any of a number of different languages.
Our most recent travels have taken us to South America and Easter Island, the Galapagos, Santa Barbara and Bodega Bay in California. The world is a gorgeous place when we humans aren't mucking it up too much.
Here and on the next page is a selection of photos I've taken over a couple of years... Click on any photo for a full page view.
The beaches around here are amazing. On the left: part of a 10 mile walk in Mackerricher State Park. On the right: a view of Mendocino from its headlands. My bookstore is among the buildings you can see on the bluff. In summer these scenes are often fogged out.
These scenes are from our garden in Caspar, about 1.5 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. The mushrooms are wild and grow in and around our driveway overnight in winter.
Blair Tindall visited Gallery Bookshop in July, 2005. She played the Mozart Oboe Quartet with Joselyn (violin) Ted Seitz (viola) and myself on cello. It was a wonderful moment. Read about Blair here:Mozart in the Jungle
I grew these potatos in a pot in our back yard. Nous mangeons bien chez Bartlett and Miksak, non?
We traveled in France in 2005. These two drunken pictures are of Joselyn and myself sitting at a restaurant on a street in Avignon. It's not that we were drunk so much as SO glad to have a sit down and some fluid. Hot day, good day.
