"D" Event SW12/Y1135 Downtown

In spite of national media coverage, walking in the El Paso area has not been affected by the violence in nearby Juarez, Mexico. No walks go into Mexico - but you can see it from most of the current walk routes. All walks are limited to daylight hours. We, as local walkers, continue to enjoy the walks and hope you will choose to join us.  

  

"D" Event - SW10/Y1135 - Downtown - 2 routes - 5km (3.1 miles) or 10km (6.2 miles) in length.
Note: This event qualifies for the following Special Event Program walks:  Artistic Heritage, Carnegie Libraries, Courthouses of the USA, Firehouse, Hillside Letters, Historic Churches, Honoring Law Enforcement, Museums, Native American Culture, Railroad Heritage,  U.S. Presidents, Veteran Memorial, and Walking the U.S. - A-Z (Letter E.)   
 
Directions to Start/Finish Point & Parking -  
 
El Paso Convention Center and Visitors Bureau Office, 1 Civic Center Plaza, El Paso, TX 79901-1153 (Santa Fe St.). Telephone: 915/534-0600.
EASTBOUND on I-10. Take Exit-19: TX-20/DOWNTOWN/ CONVENTION CENTER. Turn RIGHT on N. Santa Fe St. Then turn RIGHT onto Civic Center Plaza.
WESTBOUND on I-10. Take Exit-19B: DOWNTOWN/CONVENTION CENTER. Continue onto E. Missouri Ave.  0.4 miles. Turn LEFT onto TX-20 (N Mesa ST) and go 0.2 miles. Turn RIGHT onto E. Mills Ave. and go 0.1 miles. Bear RIGHT onto San Francisco Ave. for 0.1 miles. Bear RIGHT onto S Santa Fe St. for 0.1 miles. Turn LEFT onto Civic Center Plaza. The Visitors Bureau is about 1 block ahead on the RIGHT in the Civic Center Complex. There may be metered parking along some side streets or continue to the covered parking garage about 1 block down Santa Fe St. All day parking is $4. From the parking garage, walk back up to street level and turn LEFT. Walk past the Juarez Trolley Stop and look for the small stairway down to the Visitor Bureau. Ask the receptionist for the Walk Box.
Start/Finish Times Regular hours - Mon-Fri 8am-5pm, Sat and Sun 10am-3pm. Closed holidays.
 
Alternate Start/Finish: You may also sign in at the UTEP start/finish.  Albertsons Grocery Store at 3100 North Mesa (intersection of Mesa and Gregory). Coming from New Mexico on IH10,take the Downtown/Convention Center Exit 19. Go four short blocks to Mesa and turn left. Travel about 1.6 miles to Albertsons, which is on the right. Coming from the east on IH10, take the Mesa Exit 19A. (This is NOT the same exit as the "A" Event.) Turn right onto Mesa. Once on Mesa, travel about 1.5 miles to the Albertsons, which is on the right. Directions to the start/finish point and parking will be included with the instructions for the downtown walk.
 Registration -- Albertsons Grocery Store is open 6:00 a.m. to 12 Midnight seven days a week. You may register to walk during these hours; however, please walk only during daylight hours. Trail Rating -- The 5 & 10 km trails are flat (1+) on the sidewalks.  The course is suitable for strollers, wagons and wheelchairs.
 
Trail Description -- These walks will take you along the areas of historic El Paso where John Wesley Hardin and Pancho Villa once walked. Some sights along the trail are the Insights science museum, railroad museum, Art Museum, and courthouse.
 
Refreshments -- Water fountains and bathrooms are available at the bus station about 2 blocks from the start/finish. There are also facilities which sell food and drinks along the route.
 
Awards - "B" awards from previous years are available in the start box for $4.00 which includes IVV credit.
