| Nov. 19 (Bloomberg) -- AOL, the Internet unit being spun off from Time Warner Inc. in December, plans to cut about one- third of its workforce over the next several months. AOL employs about 6,900 people, AOL spokeswoman Tricia Primrose said in an e-mail, indicating job cuts of about 2,300. The company will begin a voluntary layoff program Dec. 4 and is looking for as many as 2,500 volunteers, she said. AOL will begin firing employees if the voluntary departures fall short. | tim whiston | November 19, 2009 | http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=aJ5u3uYmWOQs | | Hammered by a steep drop in the sale of traditional packaged video games, Electronic Arts Inc. on Monday said it would cut 1,500 jobs, more than 16% of its workforce, even as the game publisher announced plans to acquire online game developer Playfish Inc. in a deal valued at up to $400 million. The dual moves -- one aimed at trimming expenses by about $100 million a year and the other at increasing profits -- came as the Redwood City, Calif., firm released its fiscal second-quarter earnings showing a 17% decline in revenue from its packaged games business, reflecting an industrywide malaise. | Tim Whiston | November 9, 2009 | http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-ct-ea10-2009nov10,0,387264.story | | WASHINGTON -- Nearly 16 million people can't find jobs, the Labor Department said Friday, pushing the unemployment rate over 10 percent for the first time since 1983. The Labor Department said Friday that the economy shed a net total of 190,000 jobs in October, less than the downwardly revised 219,000 lost in September. August job losses were also revised lower, to 154,000 from 201,000. But the loss of jobs last month exceeded economists' estimates. It's the 22nd straight month the U.S. economy has shed jobs, the longest on records dating back 70 years. Counting those who have settled for part-time jobs or stopped looking for work, the unemployment rate would be 17.5 percent, the highest on records dating from 1994. The jobless rate rose to 10.2 percent from 9.8 percent in September. The jump reflects a sharp increase in the tally of unemployed Americans, which rose to 15.7 million from 15.1 million. That was much larger than the net loss of jobs, which is based on a survey of businesses. Economists say it could climb as high as 10.5 percent next year because employers remain reluctant to hire. | Tim whiston | November 6, 2009 | http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/11/06/unemployment-rate-tops-percent-million-people-look-jobs/ | | Nov. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Johnson & Johnson, the world’s largest health-products company, will fire more than 7,000 workers as consumers cut spending on items ranging from drugs to skin care amid the global recession. | tim whiston | November 3, 2009 | | | Oct. 28 (Bloomberg) -- US Airways Group Inc., the smallest full-fare U.S. airline, said it will cut 1,000 jobs as it drops almost half of its daily flights from Las Vegas and suspends Philadelphia service to five European cities including Milan. | tim whiston | October 28, 2009 | http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=a0YldT8bebK4 | | FACT: "As of last month, 15 million unemployed Americans were competing for three million available jobs," said Max Baucus. That’s one indication of the latest jobs report by payroll provider ADP released this morning. Private non-farm employers shed 254,000 jobs in September, according to the report. The projection shows job losses slowing, but months of continued losses remain ahead, according to Joel Prakken, chairman of Macroeconomic Advisers and author of the report. All of the decline in job losses in September comes from small and midsize businesses, according to the ADP report. Large employers with more than 500 employees shed 61,000 jobs in September, about the same decline as ADP reported in August. But losses at mid-size companies (with between 50 and 499 workers) slowed significantly: they lost 93,000 jobs in September, compared to 116,000 in August. Likewise, the report shows small companies with under 50 employees losing 100,000 jobs in September, down from 122,000 in August. | Tim Whison | September 30, 2009 | | | Unemployment rate jumps to 26-year high The rate rose unexpectedly to 9.7% in August from 9.4% in July. The National Center for Education Statistics found U.S. students placed below average in math and science. He noted a special analysis put out last week by the National Center for Education Statistics that compares 15-year-old U.S. students with students from other countries in the Organization for Economic Development. It found the U.S. students placed below average in math and science. In math, U.S. high schoolers were in the bottom quarter of the countries that participated, trailing countries including Finland, China and Estonia. According to the report, the U.S. math scores were not measurably different in 2006 from the previous scores in 2003. But while other countries have improved, the United States has remained stagnant. In science, the United States falls behind countries such as Canada, Japan and the Czech Republic. | Tim Whiston | August 26, 2009 | | | NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The number of Americans filing for initial unemployment insurance rose last week, the government said Thursday, surprising economists.
