Requirements of AKBA

REQUIREMENTS OF AKBA HAVE BEEN PUT IN PLACE IN AN EFFORT TO PROTECT THE PUREBRED POPULATION OF KUNEKUNE PIGS IN AMERICA AND BEYOND, TO ESTABLISH AN ACCURATE RECORD OF KUNEKUNE PIGS IN AMERICA, TO CREATE A REGISTRY OF INTEGRITY AND GOOD REPUTATION, AND TO BEST SERVE THE MAJORITY OF ITS ASSOCIATES.  AS AN BREEDER ASSOCIATE OF AKBA, REGISTERED BREEDERS ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLY TO ALL RULES AND REGULATIONS.  AS THE BENEFICIARY OF THEIR ASSOCIATION WITH AKBA, BREEDERS ARE ASKED TO SUPPORT AND EMBRACE THE PHILOSOPHY AND STANDARDS HELD BY THE ASSOCIATION.  AKBA RESERVES THE RIGHT TO AMEND ANY REQUIREMENT OR TO MAKE CHANGES TO THE RULES OR PROCEDURES AS NECESSARY.  AKBA RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REFUSE SERVE TO ANYONE.

The term "BREEDER" always refers to the registered owner of the sow.  Breeders must have a Prefix Application on file with AKBA in order to register their litters/piglets.

***As a requirement of holding the "Associate Breeder" status with AKBA (otherwise known as a "Registered Breeder"), breeders are required to register ALL intact animals.  Any animal retained by the breeder for their breeding operation, must be registered to the breeder as owner.  Any animal sold intact, must be registered with AKBA.  Violation of this requirement will result in a substantial fee or removal from our list of Registered Breeders.

***All intact animals must be registered prior to release of their custody to the new owner/buyer.  Contracts allowing a buyer to take custody of a pig while the breeder "holds back" the papers as a condition of the completed sale is prohibited unless the breeder has completed all required paperwork prior to that release.  It is the sole responsibility of the breeder to register the piglets produced in their breeding program.

***The term "Breeder" refers to the owner of the sow.  The owner must be a Breeder Associate/Registered Breeder in order to register their litters/piglets.  Registration of pigs/piglets is the sole responsibility of the breeder.  Never pass registration paperwork onto the buyer.  AKBA will not recognize paperwork submitted by anyone but the breeder except in the case of Transfer of Ownership forms.

***As a requirement of registering pigs/piglets, Proof of Parentage via DNA testing (provided by UC Davis' VGL) must be provided on each pig.  A hard copy of the DNA Report must accompany the Application for Registration and fee of $7.00 for each pig to be registered.

***Transfer of Ownership applications must be completed and signed by the owner listed on the Official Registration papers.  In an effort to ensure that registration paperwork is accurate and complete and that AKBA records are current, we encourage our breeders to submit Transfer of Ownership forms themselves rather than to pass the form onto the new buyer.  Please submit the Official Registration and Pedigree with the Transfer of Ownership form along with the proper fee to AKBA.

***AKBA will register spay/neutered pigs for our Associate Breeders upon request.  Official documents will be identical to those of breeding pigs with a notation:  "Pet Pig Registration".

PROCEDURES:

DNA reports in the form of "Proof of Parentage" are required on all registered pigs produced by Breeder Associates.  These reports must be obtained through the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at UC Davis in Davis, California.  Online forms may be completed for submitting hair samples for DNA testing once an account has been set up.  Payment for testing is $40 per pig paid to VGL.

Important:  Due to the manner in which Registered Names are created, it is important to use a specific format when filling out forms for VGL.  PLEASE STRICTLY FOLLOW THE PROTOCOL BELOW:

***In the blank asking for the pigs name, you will enter your prefix (assigned by AKBA) followed by the pigs herd book number (assigned by AKBA).  Example:  USA 1234
DO NOT USE GIVEN NAMES, AKA ("also known as"), OR NICKNAMES.
***In the blank asking for the registration number, you will enter the herd book number (assigned by AKBA).  Example:  AKBA 1234     If the pig is registered in Britain, use BKKPS followed by their herd book number.  If the pig is registered in New Zealand, use NZ followed by their herd book number.

Once the form is completed, you will be directed to pay online or to print and mail with payment.  Once you pay and/or print, you will mail the form in with the hair sample for testing.  VGL will notify you by email that they have received your sample and then email you the results once testing is completed.
