The Heren Turambarion

Welcome to the ever-growing archives of The Heren Turambarion (Quenya for 'Order of the Masters of Fate'). This website is dedicated to roleplaying games designed for J.R.R. Tolkien's legendary world of Middle-earth. It is mainly intended to be a resource for Gamemasters, hence the name of our guild: A GM or Turambar, as we prefer to call this fortunate individual, is the incontestable master of the player characters' fate. But players alike will enjoy to learn more about Ambarquenta, our very own RPG, or to search through the wealth of character creation guidelines, character sheets, and other rules and game aids perfectly suited for use with either Decipher's The Lord of the Rings RPG or Iron Crown Enterprises' Rolemaster and MERP.

Ambarquenta

Ambarquenta is a roleplaying game specifically designed for J.R.R. Tolkien's legendary land of Middle-earth. In this effort, it is our goal to produce a game system that is all at once enjoyable, flexible, balanced, and playable, but we also strive to remain true to Tolkien's shining literary examples. Ambarquenta (meaning 'Tale of Fate' in Quenya) aims at experienced roleplayers who desire a complex, yet intuitively comprehendible set of rules which provides hooks for the Turambar to develop his stories, instead of distracting from them. The Official Games

Although the officially licensed games for roleplaying on Middle-earth (i.e., Decipher's The Lord of the Rings RPG, and ICE's classics MERP and Rolemaster) are wonderful to play and well-designed, one might argue that they still have some flaws and weaknesses. For instance, Decipher's game is - at least in our humble opinion - drastically overpowered for a decent, non-world-shattering campaign set in Middle-earth. And even if a Narrator desires to tell a chronicle of epic grandeur, she will have a hard time to come up with a good match for her player characters. Therefore, one of our main concerns was to come up with more balanced character creation guidelines. There are also many other issues covered but poorly in the books Decipher has published so far. To mention but a few, equipment and weapons, experience points awards, movement rules both for characters and fell beasts, or extra combat successes - all these matters are addressed in the Heren Turambarion's Compendium which you can download in the section dealing with Decipher's Lord of the Rings RPG.

Iron Crown Enterprises' Rolemaster, on the other hand, has never been specifically adjusted to the unique flavour of Middle-earth. So, if you're looking for a pleasing adaptation of the Rolemaster system, suited for the needs and deeds of roleplaying on J.R.R. Tolkien's famous world, please go ahead and make use of the files provided on this site! As the introduction of the third edition of Rolemaster (RMSS and RMFRP, respectively) has changed some principal mechanics of character creation, we have created two sets of rules and character sheets. The first version is more or less based on the second edition of Rolemaster (itself being the cornerstone of MERP), while the second version is built around the Rolemaster Standard System (RMSS/RMFRP). However, both versions share the same purpose: By the use of a character-point system, the greatest possible freedom in character creation is guaranteed, while game balance is maintained. Another intention is to keep characters created under the Rolemaster system on a comparable power level with the NPCs as introduced in the various MERP supplements, although new and powerful options such as talents, flaws, and training packages are incorporated.
