Morro Bay Mayor Janice Peters with Kevin Padian. Dr. Kevin Padian?s Morro Bay Winter Bird Festival 2008 talk 084 ?From Dinosaurs to Birds: How Did It Happen?? 20jan2008 Morro Bay High School Sun.20 Jan. 2008, 7:00-8:30pm, Morro Bay High School. Dr. Kevin Padian, Professor of Integrative Biology at University of California, Berkeley, studies how large-scale changes get started in evolution. To address questions such as ?How did flight evolve?? and ?How did dinosaurs walk?? he and his students examine fossil evidence and make functional analogies between extinct species and modern vertebrates. Padian began his career in science by teaching public school before deciding to broaden his training by earning a graduate degree in paleontology at Yale University. He remains vitally involved with educational issues as a supporter and board member of the National Center for Science Education, which is dedicated to responsible science education. ?It?s very difficult to fly because your structures, your movement, and your energetics have to be so closely attuned to flight. To see the sequence of changes, for example, in the evolution of dinosaurs closest to the origin of birds is really amazing,? explains Dr. Kevin Padian, Professor of Integrative Biology at University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Padian focuses his studies on how large-scale changes take place in evolution. He and his students examine fossil evidence and make functional analogies between extinct species and modern vertebrates to learn how flight evolved. Dr. Padian will share this sequence of evolutionary events leading up to powered flight in dinosaurs and birds in lay language, laced with generous measures of humor...an educational performance not to be missed!
