Muskrat at Egegik, 1977
Muskrat at Egegik, 1977
The cannery tender Muskrat at anchor in the Egegik River, Bristol Bay, Alaska. It is early in the season. The Muskrat was one of many vessels of this type built for the Army Transport Service for duty in Alaska during WWII. While I'm not sure of the actual length, they were often referred to as "86 footers." The design was also expanded to around 105 feet, but those were much less in number. In Army service, the class was known as "BSP" for Barge Self Propelled. After the war, these surplus vessels were purchased and used as cannery tenders. Vessels to bring fish from the fishing grounds to the canneries for processing. In later years, tanks and mechanical refrigeration systems were installed. The tanks would be filled with sea water and chilled by the refrigeration plant. This allowed tenders like the Muskrat to hold fish in good condition for several days. As I have noted in other photos, Bristol Bay has a rather extreme tidal range. The location where the Muskrat is anchored will allow her to stay afloat at all ranges of the tide. Frank, the skipper of the Muskrat for many years, always kept this boat in meticulous condition with respect to paint. It reminded me of the person that washes a cherished car every day. And it made for some good photos.
Bristol 188 XF926
Bristol 188 XF926
Built by the Bristol Aeroplane Company mainly of stainless steel, this aircraft was designed to investigate the effects of heat on aircraft structures at very high speeds (maximum speed was Mach 1.88). To protect the pilot against heat a special cockpit refrigeration system was installed. Nicknamed the "Flaming Pencil," only two Bristol 188s ever flew (this is the second one). Their de Havilland Gyron Junior engines, the first British engines designed for sustained supersonic operation, were the precursors to the very successful Olympus used in Concorde and most modern Royal Navy ships. The failure to reach the planned Mach 2 speeds, combined with fuel leaks, only a 25-minute(!) endurance, an-almost 300 mph take-off speed and cancellation of its successor, led to the early termination of the programme in 1964 after only two years of flying. Seen in the Test Hall at the RAF Museum in Cosford, Staffordshire. Info from display boards and Wikipedia.
