Altrusa House of Gainesville is an adult day health care facility that provides for the socialization and safety of frail, elderly and disabled adults, age 18 and over. The program is designed to meet a client’s social, medical and rehabilitative needs, while allowing her/him to continue living at home with chronic illness. As an affordable alternative to costly nursing home or in-home care, Altrusa House’s tailored services range from providing a protective environment for frail and dementia clients to full rehabilitative services for clients who want to return to an active lifestyle.
Altrusa International of Gainesville conducted a community based needs assessment in the early 1990s and the foremost concern was that the frail adults in our community were at risk for premature nursing home placement. Altrusa House is the realization of a club project that envisioned a health-care facility that would keep these adults functioning in a home environment, benefitting their families, the community and lessening the overburdened health care system. Spearheaded by Altrusa, this project succeeded through the help of many organizations, including the City of Gainesville, the Rotary and Kiwanis clubs, and many community leaders. In 1998, Altrusa House was opened, and is currently managed by EasterSeals Florida.
The Altrusa club continues to be involved in Altrusa House through volunteering and client support.
On occassions Altrusa House will host field trips, guest speakers or special events. On October 24, 2009 Altrusa House hosted a Hispanic Heritage Festival. Not only did the clients enjoy the event so did local Altrusans and guest.
Altrusa House had a special visit from Gentle Carrousel Miniature Hourses Therapy. Our members were very exited as well as the family members. The activity was sponsored by Darnell’s family (Sadie Darnell is our Sheriff in Alachua County.) These animals go every day to different environments like: hospitals, nursing homes, hospice, school to provide sensory stimulation to adults and children with disabilities.
