Alternative Home Electric Systems:

Wind Electricity

Wind Power has been around for a very long time, harnessing of the wind energy and converting it into usable power is not a new idea it has been used since man first started sailing the seas, millers grinding wheat, pumping water and creating electricity. In fact wind is so common it has been often over looked as a major power source.

Like sunlight, wind is also inexhaustible and with the efficient use of technology and wind turbines can bring to us a very clean and renewable source of electricity.

How a Wind Farm Works - 2:09

When the wind blows against any surface it is applying pressure, if the surface is placed at the correct angle to the wind, the surface will be pushed sideways. This is how sailors have been able to navigate and go in the correct direction for years. The Wind Power Generator, Wind Mill or Wind Turbine captures the Wind energy by positioning a blade or paddle into the Wind that strikes a blade applying pressure thus pushing it into motion, the blade is attached to a shaft that rotates that supplies the power for the application.

There are 3 main components to a Wind Power Generator system these are:

1.    The Wind Power Generator, Wind Mill or Wind Turbine captures the Wind energy by positioning a blade or paddle into the Wind that strikes a blade applying pressure thus pushing it into motion, the blade is attached to a shaft that rotates and powers a generator.
2.    Electricity - Wind Generators can create an AC or DC electric current, in the case of DC current it is converted to AC current.
3.    All the Wind Power Generators are hooked int the wind farm grid system that feeds all the electricity into a central power station, where the electricity is stepped up to a higher voltage before sending to the transmission lines.

It has only been in recent years that energy companies have noted the public concern of electricity being produced by Fossil Fuels and Nuclear Power and have invested billions of dollars to install wind farms with hundreds of wind powered generators as an alternate and put these on the electric grid system.

Although wind farms are pollution free they are an ugly scare on the landscape, and a  large capital investment is required as well as being expensive to maintain making the cost of wind generated electric high.
