I purchased this machine (red one) in 07' and spent a few months getting it running before the snow flew. I was able to drive it around and had a blast. There are many issues with it as suspected but I wanted to see if it was something I would keep or not. I decided to restore it and not much after bought another machine (blue one) that was in running condition. Both machines are GT15 models. See the details below for work done since 07'.
In 07' I started working on the driveline on the red one. I made some engine repairs to get it running but it does overheat after long use. I rebuilt the tillotson carburator, installed new points and condensors, set the timing, and used new plugs and wires. It starts well and idles great but I believe there is a air leak in the lower end leaning it out because it overheats a little after long use. I also took apart the apex transmission and installed new bearings and seals. I am looking for another one of these transmissions so if you have one or any parts let me know !! I then dissasembled, sandblasted and rebuilt the formsprag clutch packs. I put the machine back together and used it for a little while longer until spring came around.
In 08' the lower body was repaired and modified to accept the shorter tracks I added. I also fiberglassed in a steel strip 1/16" X 1" around the lip. The original tracks were no longer available and impossible to find used in good condition. The tracks used were kimpex durado type 5. These are the same tracks that were used on older john deere and scorpion snomobiles. They are approx 12" shorter than the original Alsport tracks so the drive sprockets were moved back 6" so the rear of the track would still be in the same place. I was able to finish the body work and start on the track installations. I purchased another GT15 in the summer but it was more of a parts machine than anything. I got quite a few good parts from this machine.
In 09' the rear suspension parts were all sandblasted, and repaired by welding. Each unit was dissasembled, repaired, and had new bogie wheels installed. New drive sprockets (scorpion models) were installed with new bearings. The metal side rails also had to be shortend 6" and everthing was painted and the new tracks were installed. I started working on the front suspension springs and skis and have one side done. I am still working on the other side but too many summer projects came up so its been awhile since I had time to work on it.
Please see the links under Restoration progress for details !!
I am always intersted in any parts or machines you may have to sell.. Thanks Chad |
