How to Start an AKD Chapter: Eligibility for Charter
A charter to establish a
chapter of this Society may be granted only to a college or university that is
accredited by the appropriate national or regional academic accrediting agency
and which offers a program or coursework leading to baccalaureate and/or
graduate degrees in sociology, provided that the following standards are
maintained:
- At least two instructors
shall devote their full time to the teaching of sociology, and at least one of
them shall agree to maintain active membership in the Society while serving as
a chapter representative.
- To be an
active member, a person must be initiated and must renew active membership each
calendar year. If a prospective chapter
representative is not a member, then that person may become a charter member of
a new chapter. After the first year, the
person must renew active membership every year they serve as a chapter
representative. There must be at least
two PhDs in sociology in the department.
- At least ten semester courses (or the equivalent of thirty semester
hours) of sociology must be a regular part of the curriculum (exclusive of
extension courses)
- at least one course in methods of sociological research
and at least one course in sociological theory must be required.
The AKD Council determines whether
departments qualify for charter.
