Firefighters at the scene of the bin fire fire in Hampton Vale. Two fire engines were slightly damaged as firefighters tackled a blaze at a block of flats yesterday (15 June). The fire started in the bin store of a three-storey block of flats on Clayburn Road, in Hampton Vale, Peterborough, at 3.10pm. As the fire crews arrived at the scene, one fire engine clipped the back of a second, causing damage to both vehicles. A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue service said the vehicles would be taken off the road for repairs to be carried out, but replacement trucks had been bought in to ensure a full service was available. Firefighters smashed a window of a first-floor flat to make sure the building was empty, before bringing the flames under control. Agnes Braybrook, who lives near the flats on Clayburn Road, said: “The bin cupboard was alight when the fire engines arrived. “We were told that it was the bins that were set alight. “It is very rare for something like this to happen around here.” Stuart Smith, watch manager at Dogsthorpe fire station, said: “We were called at 3.15pm to a fire in the bin store. All persons were accounted for when we arrived, and no-one was injured. “The fire hasn’t directly affected the flats, although there is a bit of smoke damage.
