SUPER Y NATIONAL REPORT Sunday Play to Determine Semi-Final Berths November 21st, 2009 TAMPA, Florida - After qualifying two teams and seeing one advance to the semi-finals in 2008, the Alliance is looking to improve on that accomplishment at the 2009 National Championships. Two teams, the u14 Boys and u15 Girls are in control of their destiny while the third remains unbeaten with no mathematical chance to advance. The u15 Boys saw their chance of advancing smack off the crossbar in the final minutes of an entertaining 2-2 tie with the New Jersey based TSF Academy. That win coupled with a win on Sunday would have been enough to see the team to the semis but, it wasn't to be. Looking back on the first match, coach Mark Christensen felt they deserved to win, "We settled down after halftime and created five or six great chances but, couldn't score. We had control of the match and I was no longer worried about them scoring." In the end, the game ended 0-0. That Saturday tie coupled with today's 2-2 deadlock put Alliance four points behind division leaders RSL Florida making the two team's Sunday match Alliance's battle for 2nd and RSL's interest in a top semi-final seed. Seeding is also on the mind of the Alliance u14 Boys as they head into their final group match with two wins. The team can win the group outright with a win or a tie against West Pines. Having a goal differential of four (4) puts the boys in a strong position in their group as any close loss would still allow the team to advance on goal difference. A good result on Sunday will give the boys a #2 or #3 semi-final seed. The u15 Girls broke open a four way tie in their group on Saturday behind two Charlie Socia strikes. The team can advance with a win or tie on Sunday. Follow all the teams results and see photos here. SUPER Y LEAGUE REPORT Alliance Academy Improves on National Ranking October 26th, 2009 GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan - The USL announced their end of the season Super Y League club rankings this week and Alliance landed at #18. The top twenty ranking is an improvement over their 2008 ranking of #19 and is an impressive achievement for the club's second year in the league. "Ultimately, we have two club goals as it relates to the Super Y League. First, we want to win a National Championship and second, we would like to be ranked in the top eleven (11) clubs in the country," said Alliance Academy director Abrahm Shearer. Clubs are ranked based on a competitive and administrative basis. In November, three teams, the u14 Boys, u15 Boys, and u15 Girls will be traveling to Florida to compete for for a national title. Clubs can improve their final ranking with strong championship performances but, even if the club wins all three titles, a jump into the first eleven (11) would be mathematically impossible. LEAGUE REPORT u14 Girls East Win Elite Division October 25th, 2009 GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan - The newly formed Alliance FC East team wrapped up the u14 Girls Elite Championship with a 1-0 win over the Plainwell Force. "The competition for the girls was tight throughout the season and we found ourselves in a number of competitive matches," said team coach Ryan Fitzsimmons. "I am extremely pleased with the way the girls fought for the important results in the final three matches!" LEAGUE REPORT u14 Boys MRL Down Top Ranked Wolves October 20th, 2009 GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan - On a weekend that featured a number of important league match-ups, the u14 Boys MRL team, coached by Zsolt Bertalan, pulled off a historic 3-1 win over the #1 Ranked team in the United States (National Soccer Rankings.com). With Morris Kamara, a regional team and national pool forward, out with a concussion, the team desperately needed someone to fill his role. Coach Bertalan pointed out that, "Morris draws a tremendous amount of attention due to his finishing ability, speed and strength. At this level, everyone becomes accustomed to committing two (2) defenders to stop or slow down a top player like Morris. With him out, we needed another player to stretch their defense and give our midfielders time and space to play." That player turned out to be Austin Klodzinski. After the final whistle blew, Klodzinski found the net three (3) times to garner everyone's attention and secure the win. Austin's first goal, a back post strike in the 15th minute set the tone for the match. "It was a special goal," Bertalan lauded, "it gave the team the confidence it needed to win". The Wolves leveled the match minutes later with a powerful strike that beat Alliance keeper Kyle Taalman from 25 yards. This would be the end of the Livonia based team's goal scoring as the goalkeeping tandem of Taalman and Miguel Nava made a number of crucial saves. The Wolves offense, which is ranked 3rd out of 50 MRL teams, was further hampered by the outstanding second half performance of defender, Justin DeWildt. "Justin shut down their strongest forwards and his distribution was incredible," said coach Bertalan. In addition to his defensive contributions, it was a perfectly placed fifty (50) yard assist by DeWildt that would help Klodzinski score with fifteen (15) minutes on the clock. Then the Alliance boys survived a few tense moments of pressure until Klodzinki's 3rd goal secured the win with six (6) minutes left in the game. "The Wolves are the defending USYS Region 2 Champions and it took a collective team effort to win today," Bertalan concluded. "The commitment and determination showed by all the boys was a byproduct of excellent on field leadership. I give credit to our captain, Eli Appleby, for pulling the team together this week during the match and in training." TOURNAMENT REPORT Alliance FC u9 Boys Black Win Platinum Tournament October 15th, 2009 ST. LOUIS, Missouri - In a tournament nationally recognized as a Got Soccer Platinum event, the Alliance FC u9 Boys Black team, coached by Ryan Fitzsimmons, walked away as champions in the premier division. After the Metro United Fall Classic win, Coach Fitzsimmons commented that he was, "very pleased with the boys performance". "I thought the team improved their organization and shape as the tournament went on. We didn't show too well in the first two games giving up five (5) goals so, seeing their improvement was a highlight!" The five (5) goals against on Saturday were countered by seven (7) goals scored which gave the team a record of 1-0-1. Sunday was a complete turnaround as Alliance scored eight (8) goals while giving up only one (1). While Nate Texer came up with a number of excellent saves in goal and every boy had some fantastic moments it was a thrilling performance by Giuseppe Calabrese that secured the championship. After moving from midfield to center forward, Calabrese scored five (5) goals. First, he buried four free kicks then Calabrese finished the tournament in style with an incredible 1/2 volley. "Our philosophy has always been that winning at the younger ages must take a back seat to sportsmanship and player development. We know this team represented our club very well in every respect and are proud of the boys and Ryan," said, Abrahm Shearer, Alliance FC's club director. ![]() 2010 Super Y League Try-Outs Announced Grand Rapids, MI- While three teams (u14 Boys, u15 Girls, and u15 Boys) are heading to the November Super Y League National Finals in Florida, Alliance Academy is already planning for next year's campaign. Alliance Academy '97 Black Fall Short in Troy Cup Championship August 23th, 2009 Wixom, MI- The u13 Boys Academy team showed very well at the Troy Tournament and gave up a single goal in regulation play over four matches. Wins against Vardar '97 (1-0) and Vardar Ann Arbor (9-0) sent the boys into Sunday needing a tie to advance. Despite a number of excellent opportunities, the boys went down 1-0 on a penalty kick. Fortunately, a rebound goal by Luis Anaya in the final two minutes sent the boys through to the finals. The championship was an excellent match up against the Michigan Wolves and despite GK, Jake Townsley saving two penalty shots, the game was decided in the Wolves favor by the sixth shooter. In the four matches, the boys scored eleven (11) goals and gave up one (1) against some very tough competition.
