Three lessons
Three lessons
OK, children, listen closely. Lesson one: Don't put your arm out to break your fall, because that's not the only thing you'll break. You'll probably end up with a fractured collarbone, wrist, shoulder, or arm. These gals were going for the line, so they were sprinting at over 30 mph when they crashed. speed + friction + flesh = a very bad smell. Lesson two: cannibalism isn't in my future, at least if I have to do the cooking. They almost hit my son. He was shooting from the apron to camera left, and they slid to a stop pretty much at his feet. Which brings us to our third lesson of the day: Don't stop taking pictures just because two sweaty, smoking bodies, attached to bikes, are sliding towards you at several feet per second. He didn't get a shot because he was too busy scrambling for cover. All this, and not a scratch on the track. This is Clara Sanchez of France and Jinjie Gong of China sweeping the dust up in the finishing straight.
White asparagus and salad
White asparagus and salad
The white asparagus was simply divine - so soft and tender, melted in my mouth. Ate it with a salad of mache (lamb lettuce) leaves, orange segments and a salsa-like dressing with chopped shallots, herbs, honey, balsamic vinegar, olive oil and orange juice. The colours look good too.
