What are dinosaurs?

Dinosaurs were a large group of reptiles that were the dominant land vertebrates (animals with back bones) for most of the Mesozoic era.  Dinosaurs are categorized into two main groups according to the structure of their pelvis, or hip bone: saurischiains and the orinthischians.  These two groups are subdivided into five categories according to important physical features.  A Dinosaurs diet can also categorize it: as carnivorous (meat eating), herbivorous (plant eating), or omnivorous (both meat and plant eating),  Dinosaurs can also be organized by where they lived: in the land, air, or sea.

Types of Dinosaurs:

      Carnivores:                                                                      Herbivores:                                                              Albertosaurus                                                                                               Ankylysaurus

                 Baryonyx                                                                                                        Brontosaurus

                                                                                                                                             Brachiosaurus

                                                                                                                                             Diplodocus

                                                                                                                                             Edmontonia

                                                                                                                                             Iguandon

      Omnivores:

   Gallimimus

      Therapods:

Two footed, mostly predatory dinosaursThey had small arms with sharp, clawed fingers, powerful jaws and sharp teeth.  They ranged in size from about the size of a chicken to gigantic.  This group also includes ostrich like omnivores and herbivores with toothless beaks.

       Sauropodomorphs:

Herbivorous, four footed dinosaurs characterized by small heads, bulky bodies, and long necks and tails.  Many are thought to have lived in herds.

      Thyrephorans:

Four footed, armored dinosaurs characterized by rows of bony studs, plates, or spikes along their                 backs, which served as protection or helped with temperature regulation.

           Edmontonia

       Ornithopods:

"Bird-hipped" two or four footed dinosaurs who had a horny beak and plant cutting or
grinding teeth.  They ranged in size from the size of a medium dog to 50 ft long.

       Marginocephalians:

Two or four footed dinosaurs with a narrow shelf or bony frill at the back of the skull.  Their thick skulls protected their brains during head-butting contests.
