All children acquire knowledge in different ways, so we will be using a wide variety of approaches to help our class become able to read, write, and work with numbers. Children learn by doing. I will provide an environment to help each child achieve their personal best. The following is a brief list of some of the skills we will be working on.
Reading: - Track words from left to right & top to bottom - Use one-to-one correspondence to track printed words of a text - Recognize and produce rhyming words - Blend spoken sounds to form one-syllable words - Identify the initial and final sounds of a spoken word - Segment a one-syllable word into its individual sounds - Recognize capital and lower case letters - Identify letter sounds - Make predictions about stories - Identify characters, setting, and story events - Sequence story events
Writing: - Hold tools correctly - Write first and last name in proper form - Write capital and lower case letters correctly - Write sentences using a capital letter to begin, spaces between words, and a period.
Math: - Count in order 1-100 - Identify numbers 1-100 - Write numbers in order from 1-20 - Represent numbers using manipulatives - Count objects in sets - Model addition through sums of 10 using manipulatives - Model subtraction through sums of 10 using manipulatives - Identify shapes - Identify, create, and extend patterns - Tell time to the half hour - Sort & classify objects by attributes (size, color, etc.)
