I'm a PhD student at the St Andrews Cloud Computing Co-laboratory in the University of St Andrews, UK. Our aim is to become an international centre of excellence for research and teaching in cloud computing, and provide advice and information to businesses interested in using cloud-based services.

I work on the Large-Scale Complex IT Systems (LSCITS) project with Prof. Ian Sommerville and we're interested in exploring the risks, benefits, costs and general socio-technical factors involved during the adoption of cloud computing in enterprises. Checkout this video if you want to know more about my research, as part of which, I spent most of 2011 at RightScale as a Software Engineering Intern.

I recently co-founded ShopForCloud.com, which was acquired by RightScale in July 2012 and re-branded as PlanForCloud.com, this is a free cloud cost forecasting website enabling you to get detailed cost reports for deployment options in minutes.

Benefits and Risks of Using Public Clouds

I put together a Google Docs spreadsheet that includes the main benefits and risks of using public clouds. These benefits and risks have been identified by reviewing over 50 academic papers and industry reports. This spreadsheet provides a starting point for the assessment of the benefits and risks involved in using the cloud and can be taken and customised by users.
